Some car porn from Cuba for the old car lovers of the OT

We spent a long weekend in Havana this past week. There are around 360000 old American cars in Cuba. Not all are in great shape but a lot of them are. The guys that drive these cars are among the top earners and cars are sold for $$$ when they change hands or they're passed from generation to generation by the families. Most of the owners are at least mechanics and many of them do the electrical work and painting themselves. The cars are painted in the bright colors for the sole reason that when they hire them out the women like to pick the cars by color.
I hope y'all enjoy.

It’s nice to see that brutal Communist dictatorships have an upside. Beautiful cars. I’m guessing when the day comes and Cubans are free that the best preserved of these cars will fetch astronomical prices.

They haven't been able to import any since Kennedy.

Because the only vehicles you see there are ones that were sent to the island pre-embargo. Nothing new has arrived on the island since.

American cars were sold in Cuba until the end of 1959. There was a gap after that in car sales so people held onto them and maintained them. Then came cars from the Soviet Union and now most cars are Chineses or from Europe. The cars from the other countries didn't have the beauty or allure of the American cars of old. They make every effort to keep and preserve every car. Almost all of the old American cars have been converted to diesel which is dirt cheap in Cuba. The hardtops have also had an air conditioning mod done to satisfy customers.

Nearly impossible for them to get new vehicles there for 30+ years.

Gotcha, I didn't know if there was some other reason that I wasn't aware of.

Went to Havana for a long weekend about a year and a half ago. Such an amazing part of the world with friendly and wonderful people despite them having many reasons to not feel that way.
The cars were a definite plus.
Probably an equal or higher chance of this happening in New Orleans compared to Havana.

I'll do a trip review on the Travel Board this weekend and I'll get into more detail about the Cuban people then. I will say that they were the friendliest people I've encountered in all my travels and that they work together as a cooperative to help each other out.

My wife and I walked all over the city at all times of day and we felt safe at all times. Yes, a lot of Havana is depressing in the level of poverty you see but I didn't feel at risk anywhere.

I really would like to visit Havana because of how things have remained the same since the 1950s.
For the citizens I am sure it's not something they are proud of, but once the relationship between the US and Cuba took a bad turn in the 50s, all they have is what they can produce and what they were able to get when the relations between the two countries were relatively good.
The US should really work towards establishing a working relationship with them, because that would increase sales for a lot of US companies.

Exactly. No doubt you encounter a lot of poverty in Havana. But the people are as friendly as they come, and at no point there did I feel uneasy or that I needed to mind my surroundings.
Most locals I spoke to were genuinely fascinated with American culture and had dozens of questions.

sorry to go on a semi-political tear, but you saw a fake Cuba. Everything I say is as the product of a family that fled the revolution in Cuba..my grandfather still has contacts there. The government, which is still a brutal dictatorship, has set up a wonderful tourism industry. Nice bars and restaurants to look like nice authentic Havana. All the money that has gone into these area has come at the expense of the actual Cuban people. He regularly gets videos of Cuban trying to rip off the scraps of a dead cow because they are starving. Only approved people are allowed to work and venture into tourist centers. Had you ventured to far to the edge of a tourist area, you would have been politely redirected by an officer. Cuba is still in bad bad shape, and much like North Korea, they will go out of their way to make sure you never see it.

I had a family member get mugged in Mexico, and one friend get shot in New Orleans. Those are the only two instances of a dangerous situation happening while traveling to anyone I know.

Just don't look under the body.
Many run on kerosene have lesser quality brakes and suspension. But drive and run. Cars then weren't expected to go 100,000 they have more than a few with 10x that.
