Don't know about Louisiana, but the Florida sugar industry owes a huge debt to the Cuban emigres from the late 50s/ early 60s. They helped build and run the first sugar mills in the Glades. Most of the American farmers in the area were transplants from the Southeast (my grandfather from Alabama, for example) who were cattlemen or truck farmers. Almost none had experience or knowledge of the sugar industry. The Cubans that came were invaluable.

Some of the Antill’s from Bayou Black near Houma worked for United Fruit in Cuba. Pre-Castro of course. Castro’s Dad was a farmer for United Fruit also. Their farms were adjacent to each other I am told.

We really need to just topple the Castro regime and free the Cuban people. Great people that don’t deserve the shite Govt they have.

Cuba in a democracy and capitalist economy would thrive

I tried to do this at a bar on the coast in S Louisiana while on a fishing trip.

Bouncer was nice but was straight up and said “you do not need to go in there.”

I followed said advice

We take a lot for granted here. Hell most of us avoid Wal Mart like the plague

Reminds me of that story where a Soviet official during the Reagan era visited the US and walked into a grocery store and assumed it must be for Govt workers only because it had everything. When told it was for normal people he broke down crying realizing how shitty communism is

It was actually Boris Yeltsin in Clear Lake TX by the Johnson Space Center.

Yeltsin, then 58, “roamed the aisles of Randall’s nodding his head in amazement,” wrote Asin. He told his fellow Russians in his entourage that if their people, who often must wait in line for most goods, saw the conditions of U.S. supermarkets, “there would be a revolution.”

“Even the Politburo doesn’t have this choice. Not even Mr. Gorbachev,” he said.

The fact that stores like these were on nearly every street corner in America amazed him. They even offered free cheese samples. According to Asin, Yeltsin didn’t leave empty-handed, as he was given a small bag of goodies to enjoy on his trip.

Most of the bodies are just a patchwork of repairs, the cars have been on a island surrounded by salt water for 60 years, and American cars of that era were not very resistance to rust. I have seen some videos of cars like 57 Chevys there with a John Deer tractor engine under the hood, and others with Honda or Toyota engines.

I’m guessing when the day comes and Cubans are free that the best preserved of these cars will fetch astronomical prices.

I read an article that stated these cars aren't worth much. It may look like a classic car, but the owners haven't had access to authentic parts for 60 years now. They are essentially Frankenstein cars with parts rigged together and machined on the island. There is little left remaining of the actual car once you get past appearances.

'm not saying this is completely nonexistent. Certainly the government wants tourists to see the brighter side of things when they come, because no doubt there's still some serious poverty in Cuba. And Havana is the most visited and "affluent" city in the country.

But my friends that drove most of the island were free to drive wherever they chose. They definitely saw a lot more of the poverty you're referring to, but they were never turned away by police or anything of that nature.

Thanks for the insight and honesty. Cuba is oppressive enough without the need for gross exaggerations comparing it to N. Korea.

I've heard that the Communist regime has always used the US "blockade" or " embargo" to explain the economic failures / issues and somewhat strengthen the Cuban publics resolve.

Does the average Cuban blame the US embargo for Cuba's economic situation ?

I've got friends who just left for Havana this morning. Some of them went about 15 years ago by booking a trip to Mexico Cityy, and then flying to Havana from there.

Not at all. In fact, everyone I spoke to was so happy that Americans were finally allowed into the country. They were fascinated with American culture and couldn’t have been more hospitable.

Are they showing as thumbnail pics? They were full sized when I posted them. Should I resize and repost?
