Agree with the below poster. Wife's family is Cuban, and what we see is fake.
Do it via a cruise. Safe place to stay at night and access to modern medical facilities if needed.

With respect, we ventured outside of Havana and weren't "redirected" by an officer. We also met up with friends in Cuba and they drove the entire island solo, never encountered this.
We also stayed in someone's apartment (like an AirBnB, but they call it something else), not exactly the Hotel Nacional.

Cuba is still in bad bad shape, and much like North Korea, they will go out of their way to make sure you never see it.
This does have some truth to it, although NK would be a much more extreme example.

Honestly, what's the point? You go to a place like Cuba to experience a different culture, unless you just go places for the instagram pictures to prove to people how "well traveled" you are.

I'm sure you did. It's not like the tourist center is a few blocks. I guess what I meant to say is you are not going to be allowed to venture into a city that is basically a slum, you're not going to be allowed anywhere where you are going to see people starving. People are in place to make sure you see the Cuba you want them to see.
I fully agree with this. But Cuba is much more extreme than people see or want to believe.

sorry to go on a semi-political tear, but you saw a fake Cuba. Everything I say is as the product of a family that fled the revolution in Cuba..my grandfather still has contacts there. The government, which is still a brutal dictatorship, has set up a wonderful tourism industry. Nice bars and restaurants to look like nice authentic Havana. All the money that has gone into these area has come at the expense of the actual Cuban people. He regularly gets videos of Cuban trying to rip off the scraps of a dead cow because they are starving. Only approved people are allowed to work and venture into tourist centers. Had you ventured to far to the edge of a tourist area, you would have been politely redirected by an officer. Cuba is still in bad bad shape, and much like North Korea, they will go out of their way to make sure you never see it.
My wife is half Cuban and is fluent in Spanish. We spoke with people all over the city. They had no problem answering our questions about who owns what, what they make, etc. Like I said, we walked everywhere in the city and only saw military in a few locations. I know Cuba is in bad shape and Havana in particular is in ad condition. The government owns every building in Havana. When you venture out of Havana the people own a lot of the houses and the difference in the care of the properties is staggering. They take pride in what they own.
It was amazing how friendly the people were considering what they earn. Yes, they all get free educations to whatever level they desire but most of them never get the opportunity to use that education. There is very little infrastructure improvement going on and the last neighborhood of new homes in Havana was in the mid-1950's. There is simply little to no work for an engineer. One of the best jobs to have is as a waiter or waitress or driving people around in one of those old cars. However, the government watches what every industry makes and if they think people are making too much they write new regulations and raise the taxes.
So, I did what I could when I visited. I spread a few CUC around because a little makes a huge difference. I took some old clothes and gave them away and people were very grateful. I tipped the owner of the AirBnB in US dollars because they are going to California in December. The owner's wife has a "list" for Walmart and she can't wait to visit and shop because to her Walmart is just about the coolest thing she's ever seen with all of the products it sells. It's an eye opening and sobering experience.

I'm not saying this is completely nonexistent. Certainly the government wants tourists to see the brighter side of things when they come, because no doubt there's still some serious poverty in Cuba. And Havana is the most visited and "affluent" city in the country.
But my friends that drove most of the island were free to drive wherever they chose. They definitely saw a lot more of the poverty you're referring to, but they were never turned away by police or anything of that nature.

and again... what I know is from my grandparents who fled the current party so while I'm sure their info is not wrong...I don't doubt it's at times exaggerated.
Overall point however, Cuba is in much worse shape than people know, and tourism really isn't helping them. The Castro's need to get fricked and rot in hell.

And as someone who's grandmother also fled Cuba and went back at the age of 85 to visit her old town, I agree it's at times exaggerated. I was just trying to argue that it's still possible to see the real Cuba, the good and the bad.

100% in agreement here.

Most of the information I received in the past was from my wife's family. Her mom left Cuba in 1947 and the rest of the relatives didn't leave until after the revolution. Those that left Cuba early universally hated Castro but...they were also people who had in Cuba and were either stripped of what they had or had to leave it behind. Of course they had good reason to feel the way that they did (they've all passed).
I agree about the overall condition of the country and that tourism does much more for the government than it does for the Cuban people and about Raul Castro.

My wife is half Cuban also. Her father escaped when he was a child. He's been back once on a mission, and left everything he could with the people he visited. Left with the clothes on his back.
It's getting better, but not what is being portrayed.

Interesting that the four of us all have family or spouses of Cuban descent.

this is where my family fell. They left with a suit case with enough clothes for the three day trip to the states they claimed to be going on. My grandmas lied to guards saying her wedding ring was fake, that it was just sentimental from her childhood and was allowed to escape with. It's depressing as hell to hear about that day. My grandmother knew full well when the wheels on that plane left the ground she would never be back...my grandpa listened to the radio and held out hope for years that the regime would fall.
