Depending on the jurisdiction the courts may do this for you. I was the victim of a hit and run in Jefferson parish and they called me several times to make sure the other driver at minimum paid my deductible.

Not a hit and run, but my brother was hit from behind in college by someone with no insurance in BR. I remember my dad saying he should be strung up in front of the courthouse.

Key takeaways:
1. Always call the police. Confirm exchange of insurance if it exists.
2. Don't chase. You never know what's going on in the other car, especially with alcohol involved. Don't decide that you need to be in a life changing moment.
3. Purchase uninsured motorist when living in Louisiana.
4. Recommend investing in a dash cam.

I had a similar story before but it was getting sideswiped by a drunk.
Cop was sitting at a business at the intersection when it happened, so I followed both of them to where the guy got pulled over and waited till the cops were done to get the info.

They need to sell his car and give you all the money.

Small claims court worth it?
I went that route many years ago and won my case. Sadly, I never saw a dime in payments because the POS took off to a variety of places in the US before returning to Nigeria.
So my court costs just added to my loss and the whole event was a huge frustration.
YMMV

Yeah. That’s the route you should go. I’m sure you’ll have no trouble getting money from him.

You can try and sue him but doubt he'd show up for court, especially if he's illegal.

How is your back feeling? Starting to get a little sore?

It would be a complete waste of your time to take this to civil court. It’s one thing to win and be granted a judgement against the opposing party, however collecting on the judgement is a whole different beast. The retard more than likely doesn’t have any assets to pursue, you’d be wasting a whole shitload of your time.

The cops gave me a case number, his full name and address and took no information from me (no ID or anything).

It turns out this guy was drunk, probably here illegally too
So did he get arrested or anything for this? Or was he just allowed to go?

If you have comp and collision you can't also have UM property damage. UM bodily injury and UM property damage are different things. UMBI is only for medical bills and stuff. Useful to have because it does cover missed wages and lawyers can finagle their way to getting the full amount in court but it doesn't have anything to do with damage to the vehicle and it's pretty damn expensive to add to your premium. Not saying don't add it but a lot of people think adding UM has to do with the vehicle, when it really doesn't if you already have full coverage.
UMPD is for when you only have liability coverage and no comp/collision i.e. full coverage then you can purchase UM property damage which will cover a not at fault accident if the other party isn't insured.

I was stopped at a red light and a guy hurrying to make the left turn arrow clipped my side mirror. He didn’t slow down so I took off after him. He pulled over and acted like I was overreacting. He gave me his insurance info off a card he had in his wallet. It was a Sunday so I called first thing Monday and they confirmed he wasn’t insured - he made one payment to get the card and then didn’t pay again.
A coworker’s husband ran a body shop so he got a new mirror and installed it for the cost of parts. I didn’t even bother going after the dirtbag.
He would have sued you 100% if the roles where reversed and you where at fault. You should have went after him and made him pay.

You are going to pay the Desuctible. Nothing you can do if he does not have insurance.
It is really funny how this works with fender benders. These guys want nothing to do with it if the other driver doesnt have insurance.
