His point of humans killing and fricking for thousands of years wasn't wrong. I imagine some people really feel a primal connection.

Nothing wrong with it, when you're in a war zone. To be back home saying shite like "I miss killing" is a little much.

Eh, I've had mixed experiences. Some talk, some don't. It's definitely an tough subject to navigate.
Same, ive had guys in my unit or instructors for various things openly talk about it.
Ive also had a guy in my unit who didn't even want to do combatives bc his experience in Afghan.

Warriors made this world. They spread their seeds. They raped and murdered their way across the globe and we have them to thank for the present day.
And one day, they’ll be a lot more killing that needs to happen. So you’d better prepare to either be the predator or be the prey.
You're a liiiitle unhinged, man. Ijs.

You ever been overseas?
Posted on 11/28/17 at 12:12 am to upgrayedd
Not on active duty. Only as a dependent (lived in Europe when I was in high school).
Wife deployed once, but it wasn't to a high danger area, thankfully.

I wouldn’t put much stock into the generational thing.. I’d be more willing to bet that it varies from person to person, and not so much generation to generation... who knows
I don't understand how soldiers, fighting in a war where it's kill or be killed, have remorse for killing the enemy.
I'm not a veteran, but I just don't think I'd have any remorse at all for killing fricking Islamic terrorists.
Like the old saying goes, "Some people just need killing."

I’ve read and listened to and consumed a LOT of history.
These times we live in...they are soft. History is full of tales of hard, hard men. The violence that was day to day...the combat...melee, up close and personal...
And then you realize that we haven’t changed all that much. Physically, men are the same. We’re the same as our ancestors, the conquerors, the builders, the warriors. It’s the world that has changed. Instead of being born into a world of scraping and fighting for a piece of the pie, we’re living in the lap of relative luxury, where even the “poor” live better than the kings of old.
And like all the empires of old that have grown fat and complacent, that have become bloated and degenerate and filled with degradation...we’re headed for a fall.
It doesn’t take a prognosticator to see the writing on the wall. Look at the history of empires, then look at us.
So I say why is it wrong for a warrior to have enjoyed his time as a warrior?
Would you fault a builder if he said “I miss building”?
Would you call a farmer unhinged if he said “I miss farming”?
Enjoy these halcyon days. Because the future, sooner or later, contains the fall of another empire.
And when it does, it will end in the same spectacular blaze they all do, with fire and blood and steel.

And that's why it's difficult to discuss these kind of things with Joe Blow. Hard to talk about insane situations and sound sane while you do it.

Anyone else have any thoughts or facts regarding Lance's description of the Kosovo War? I have barely studied in the past, but I don't remember a single case of American troops getting into a fire fight. Or any American ground equipment being attacked.

This is why I don’t talk to anyone about it. I’ve spent 65 months of my military career in either Iraq or Afghanistan. I have some completely messed up stories and I have some views and ideologies that the non military man will understand

Kill or be killed essentially is what I gathered as the central theme but each veteran interviewed had different thoughts after the kill. Good stuff.

Now, I'm not 100% sure, but I want to say I remember reading a book, about special forces or whatnot, and it made reference to a firefight while a unit was off duty or something to that affect. They were having some downtime and were ambushed and out-gunned. Someone of high importance or someone who was looked up to by all, was killed

My grandfather (WWII) never spoke about the war. We only learned things through the guys he fought along side.
N. Africa, Sicily, Italy
wounded when he drew MG fire away from his squad as they flanked two MG nests. Earned Bronze Star
I was raised never to ask about the war but summoned the courage one day when I was older.
All he told me was that he marched along a road into combat in sicily while trucks filled with bodies were heading the opposite direction.
It killed me knowing that the man I knew to be kind, loving, and supportive to every soul he met had seen such horrors.

My great uncle was on a bomber crew and had to bail over Belgium. Killed one man while hiding out with the resistance. He was hiding out in a barn when a patrol came through the town and searched the place.
He said the only thing he regrets is still being able to hear the flashlight the man dropped thud down the wooden stairs when he dreams.

Yeah, people that judge how others cope with that stress are why many don't want to talk about it

Unless you're a physcopath it would bother you. I've shot two people, both deserved it and were direct threats to my life. One died, the other did not.It bothered me , not because of those fricks but because I'm human.
