Is this a scam or is it worth it?

Scam

My favorite is when the install them over top of roof that obviously needs replacing.

Lots of people like getting scammed though. Just look at gutter guards.

What I want to know is what you do when you have to re-shingle the roof.

If you're paying full price, it's a scam.

Look at a map of solar irradiation.

Red/dark red = yes
Orange = Maybe

The rest = No

Depends why you want them

If you're worried about losing power you're far better off with a backup natural gas generator or something

If you're worried about losing power and are mostly off the grid or far from civilization then i can understand the appeal

Well it’s dark half the time but they still charge you full price. You should be able to figure it out from there.

I've seen some illustrations where they are using solar panels for patio covers. That may make sense, but not on your roof.

Wait, gutter guards are a scam? My nephew has the kind with an overlapping cover. The water goes over the cover, then around the curve, and finally sheds into the gutter. He swears by them. He says even in a deluge they work.

Putting them on the barndominium - but on the lower porch roof/awning. currently looking for PBR panel mounts. If you're electrical savvy, signature solar has some attractive kits that qualify for the 30% rebate. My logic for going off grid is that rates will only go up and that rolling blackouts will also only be increasing.

There's also the feature of being able to charge the batteries with a smaller generator and then you can run the bigger loads with the batteries/inverter.

I've seen a house near me that has panels on the north-facing roof.

A fool and his money...

They last much longer that way. The sun is not as nearly hard on the housing materials on the N face.

I have solar panels. My elec bill for June was $6. Solar powered the rest from energy stored in batteries.

how is it a scam if a homeowner puts solar panels on their shitty roof? Sounds like that's just a 'bad idea' and not a 'scam'

It all depends on where you live and how much sun you get. Our house has them and in the last 12 months I've paid a total of $114 for electricity, but I live in CA where we get sun basically everyday.

Mine is an average of 135/mo. How many years would it take for you to break even?

For my home it would be about 18 years. I have other investments I can pay into returning much quicker and higher than 18 year ROI.

I had a neighbor who built his own setup. He bought the panels, the rest (battery setup, storage, etc.) he put together himself. He saved a hell of a lot of money, and was legitimately off the grid as far as electricity was concerned.

He also had an outdoor incinerator with a heat pump for Winter, and the best well water within 50 miles.

He let his wife talk him into selling the place and moving to "town".
