I've been toying with the idea of buying a solar-powered "generator"...it is actually just a big battery that allows for solar panel inputs. It can also be charged with regular/car power.
Would be nice for camping, etc. in addition to the occasional power outage.

Not a scam, but don’t see how it’s possible to recoup the cost. You prob won’t live in your house long enough to do so and they don’t raise the property value to a buyer.
Last I heard $100/panel to remove for a new roof and your trusting the Mexican guy to put them back on right.

We bought a house that had them installed previously and our electric bill is less than $100 a month. Our neighbors are always over $300. I was not a believer before but I can't deny the savings on my bill.

I got a decent price on my gutter guards. Got tired of cleaning rose damn things out. Plus one part of my house is three stories off the ground. I’m not getting on a ladder to clean those damn things out.

The scam is that you need 7-10KW worth of panels in Louisiana to reduce your bill by half; maybe more if your house is bigger than 2500sqft.
They want to lease it to you (vs you owning it outright) because they get all the government tax incentives and future asset depreciation. A ROI on a leased system is around 2 years in the right state.

Putting them on pole mounted passive trackers is a much better option than your roof. You can increase output by up to 40%.

2) age of roof. if older roof, you have higher chance to need to pull off the panels to replace room (this will add to the payback time)
3) gas/electric house? all electric?

$20k invested at 4% compounded monthly comes out to:
$31k after 11 years
$44k after 20 years
$20k in solar panels and investing the $150 saved per month at 4% compounded monthly comes out to:

Of course that assumes a lot of things, mainly stable returns on investment, stable energy prices, and minimal equipment maintenance.

Whether they’re worth it or not depends on you and your property. There’s a lot of variables. What are you looking to do? Save money? Off grid capable with battery? Etc?
