If the condition of our government is to the point that Social Security has collapsed, then I doubt the markets will be in very good shape either.

Still time to grow your money until that happens. Anyone who is planning on relying on SS is a fool.

Many Americans believe Social Security won’t exist when they retire — they’re wrong. Social Security does face serious challenges, and the payout may decline — but the program itself is not going anywhere.

The two trust funds that pay Social Security’s benefits — the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) and the Disability Insurance (DI) trust funds — are running out of money, and the Social Security Administration’s trustees do anticipate those accounts will run out of money in 2035.

But if that happens, Social Security benefits won’t disappear. If Congress does nothing to fix the program, Social Security will rely on the taxes coming in and Americans will just get less of a benefit.

Social Security won't end you will just get 80 cents on the dollar, then 60 cents.....

So why don't they fix social security-

One reason lawmakers are hesitant to fix SS- millennials

quote:

One such proposal is the Social Security 2100 Act, introduced by Representative John Larson (D-Conn.), the chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security, as well as Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Sen. Chris van Hollen (D-Maryland). The bill, if passed, would increase revenue by raising the payroll tax 0.1 percentage points every year until it reaches 14.8% in 2043

quote:

But some testimonies suggested Social Security couldn’t be fixed with a proposal like the 2100 Act, for the sake of millennials who are strapped for cash thanks to crippling student debt and wouldn’t be able to afford to pay the extra money in payroll taxes toward Social Security.

Representative Tom Reed, the Republican leader of the Ways and Means Social Security subcommittee from New York, said an increased payroll tax would “unfairly hurt” young people. “It hurts the students struggling to pay for their rent and their next meal,” he said. “We want to empower the next generation with tools to save for their retirement in a way that works best for them.”

You do not understand how it works:
Government workers do not pay into social security and are not eligible for the benefits unless they have worked other jobs and paid in. The state retirement is received in lieu of SS benefits.

Half of millenials were born in the 80s. We have the angst and sensibilities of gen x and the tech savviness/desensitization to violence of millenials.

We also remember when we were gen Y.

In a battle royale, it is highly unlikely there is any generation as cold, calculating, and violent.

We are your reckoning.

Just imagine how much better this country would be if there weren’t any handouts to begin with.

That’s the problem I have with any socialized anything. It kills incentive. It takes from those that do and gives to those that do not.

Ever hear about what a lot of people started doing when those government checks started coming in during the depression simply for them being alive? A lot of those lazy sons of bitches just ceased looking for work.

Every American that has any pride in themselves should be against Social Security, etc. on principle alone.

If the camel once gets his nose in the tent, his body will soon follow.

Not entirely. I paid a shitload of money into SS, so I dont look at it as just another entitlement. Do I need it to survive, no. But I want at least some of it since I max paid into it every year.

I don’t think this post is getting the credit it deserves. Kids born in the 80’s were born in the middle of both the technological boom but still remember not having technology and I think are strongly overlooked. They are the first generation to be exposed to the video games and tv. They are a very quiet group but will be impactful.

Ok, well let me ask you this, if you weren’t forced to pay into our form of socialism, would you? How much more money do you think you’d have through savings, investments, etc. if you didn’t have to max pay into it every year?

Only those employed prior to 1984.
But, they essentially had their own similar plan just for themselves.
And about this state retirement pension, it's not taxed as ordinary income in most states, while private worker's pensions are.
