guarantee you that the people who get the most money will be renters who don't pay taxes. Makes me sick to think about

This is what happened in Monroe/WM....just warning you

Not trying to taunt, but many many many new orleans residents aren't required to carry flood insurance.

As an outsider looking in, it would be crazy not to carry it though.

I mean if you're not close to a flood zone and your house hasn't flooded ever, why would you have it?

Becauee when you don't live in a flood zone the insurance cost $350 a year. So less than a dollar a day. My heart goes out for those that don't have it, but it's crazy not to considering how cheap it is

I'm in Zone X, and the March flooding put the fear of god into me. I bought it for the first time as soon as the insurance agent opened. Living near the Mississippi, I sweated the high river in 2011 and 2015 IIRC, but the March 2016 flooding totally freaked me out. Don't need the insurance so far, but still glad I have it.

New orleans is a different situation than Baton Rouge. It would be crazy to not have flood insurance in Nola. However, BR has lots of high ground compared to NOLA.

As of last night, FEMA had allocated 19.4 million to Louisiana. There's over 19.4 million of damage in denham alone.

That was a recent article but those numbers were related to the March flood.

FEMA trailer and home rebuilding/repair loans through FEMA. Very, very bad idea not to have flood insurance, unless you just don't care whether you have a house and don't care about what money you put into it. The flood insurance is to protect a homeowner's investment. A lot of people just don't see it that way. I don't understand that.

FEMA and Red Cross will likely provide some funding, but it will only be a pittance for many.

Unfortunately, this disaster isn't going to garner much attention outside of Louisiana, which is why nearby states and those with local connections need to mobilize.

What "poor decisions"????

They didn't build in a flood plain. Most of them don't even have the option to buy flood insurance with their carrier.

GO frick yourself with a lawn sized bag of dicks you frick.

Everyone is in a flood zone. The difference is the degree of risk.

I meant in zones which don't require insurance even when you carry a mortgage.

So you are saying the entire state is a flood zone, right?

Well considering the vast vast majority of South LA has experienced massive flooding in the last decade......

As long as I live in Louisiana, even if I lived at the highest point possible that never ever flooded, I will have flood insurance. Many years ago the May 3rd flood caught a lot of people off guard in the River Ridge area where they had 3ft + water in the house (might have been a later flood, but I learned about it through a piano dealer in New Orleans).

I'm not in a flood zone but I purchased it after the drainage in my neighborhood fricked up and the water came within a few feet of my door. Not taking chances.

ETA: I live in south Florida

As I said...outsider looking in doesn't see it that way.

I didn't own flood insurance in Pville because I figured it was an expense I could live without. Honestly, was trying to save anywhere I could. It was foolish of me. I realize I could easily be in the situation a lot of people are in right now trying to save a few dollars a month. It really is heartbreaking.
