Pretty terrible example. Your example includes an event that happens every day (wrecks, theft, break down), a flood like this is an unimaginable scenario to most people.
It's closer to getting meteorite insurance than car insurance

Yes, in the Nashville flood of 2010 people who had creeks running in their backyard got flooded out. They never could have anticipated that in a million years.

I don't want to argue or pile on while others are having everything they own wash out from under them.
I shouldn't have even said what I posted and wont go any further because no one needs someone 7 hours away giving advice like a peanut gallery.
I hate y'all are going thru this and wish you all the best. Seriously.

non flood plain insurance.
Technically the majority of south Louisiana is in a flood zone. The high points are just flood zone x (minimal risk).

Everyone seems safe. Some have evacuated today but nobody as far as I know is hurt. One good buddy is getting married in 2 weeks so I am hoping the venues are fine. Hell I am sure something that goes with his wedding will be affected.

Parents house is under water, lucky they had flood insurance so now my mom is thinking what they will be getting.

Nurse, this is the correct answer right off the gun.

I saw someone who had just closed on a new home the day before it flooded. It's not a flood zone so I imagine a lot of people don't have insurance.

Not giving advice, just stating the facts that happened in Nashville. And they are facts.

Maybe some federal assistance. Hopefully with the stipulation that they fix their house and not just abandon it.
I hope that a lot of people bought flood insurance after the flood scare in March/April.

"I'm not in a flood plain." What an ignorant crock of shite. If you live in Baton Rouge, you are in the flood plain of the Mississippi. All of south La was built by flooding rivers. You now live in 100% complete reliance on man made levees. If you feel ok doing that without insurance, good luck. But it's still a low lying area regardless.
I'm on the westbank of Jeff Parish. I lived through Katrina and didn't flood. I've always had flood insurance, and yes, it was hard to listen to jackasses from other parts of the state after Katrina acting like they were untouchable and this was somehow a function of New Orleans' dysfunction. But I wish harm on no one. This is heartbreaking what I am seeing.

frick off dick. Many of the people that got flooded are in areas that may never see water again for generations. This isn't some common occurance caused by poor decisions.

Insurance is for these uncommon occurences.
If they live in south Louisiana they are in danger of flooding. Sorry that's such a hard concept to grasp for some people.
My house in nola didn't flood for the biggest and most devastatingly destructive hurricane this state has ever seen that left 80% of the city under water. Should I forego flood insurance? I mean, surely it will never flood since I dodged the bullet thay time right?

I called my mother who lives right outside BR and told her if you don't have flood insurance by next week, then that's on you.
She responded not a flood zone.
I linked this thread.

Everywhere has some degree of danger of flooding. Some areas impacted by flooding these past few days had a 2/10ths percent chance of seeing a flood. They were developed there for that reason, so I can understand not purchasing insurance.
Flood insurance is not prudent or reasonable in every area. That said.....I sincerely hope that a lot of people purchased flood insurance after the March and April storms showed how serious mother nature can be.

Several people in this thread as well as others have said that they won't be getting flood insurance because if they flood everyone else is fricked too or something like that. I guess some people are just that stubborn.

I honestly was quite shocked they didn't have it. It's a 400K home with no flood insurance for a premium of $30-40 a month? Doesn't make good common sense.
