Those with no option to buy flood insurance through their carrier, need to find one that will sell it to them. That's an ignorant reason not to have the insurance.

So you are saying the entire state is a flood zone, right?
Well considering the vast vast majority of South LA has experienced massive flooding in the last decade......
My parents live in Biltmore (Central) and have never even come close to having water near their house. Even during 83 and Andrew. Water got up to their front porch yesterday. My brother off Hooper road has never had flooding either. They had 5 inches in their house.
No one, I mean NO ONE could predict this level of flooding.

Most of them don't even have the option to buy flood insurance with their carrier.
My heart goes out to those that have lost their houses without insurance. And I will be doing my part to volunteer services in order to help. Baton Rouge is my home, so I will those those rebuild. However, it was a risk that these people took. There should be some help from the govt, as those people pay taxes so they deserve the help those taxes entail. However, they will be responsible for their decisions for the most part
Now, I understand some people in here are being overly douchey about it. Now is not the time to wave your finger in someone's fade saying "I told you so."

look i'm not trying to be a dick, but yeah
we live in a state that has weird elevation/flood issues and LOTS of water, esp in south LA
i'm not here to rub anything in, but most of LA has major flood issues

Maybe Trump, in his all caring ways, will pay for damages of those who are uninsured!!! NOT!

Everyone has the option to buy flood insurance no matter what carrier you choose.

I am going back and forth on this issue. Insurance, by its nature, is for unpredictable events. That being said, this is just historic flooding.
I'm sympathetic and think they should get some help; however, it shouldn't be a full ride.

insurance outside of a flood zone is anywhere between 25 and 35 dollars a month for most houses. it's pure stupidity not to have it in South Louisiana, protect your assets geesh
Eta: I don't plan on dying but have life insurance I don't plan on my house burning down but have homeowners insurance I don't plan on getting injured long term but I have disability insurance plan for the unexpected

Because it had flooded many times in areas that are not flood zones. Pumps fail, drainage gets blocked, etc. and you flood even though you are not in a flood zone.

Family is staring 200k plus damage with no flood insurance. I mean if you're not close to a flood zone and your house hasn't flooded ever, why would you have it?
If your house has never burned down would you drop your homeowners insurance?

a lot of people in this situation got low interest loans after Katrina

yeah i'm curious how much it would cost for most people who are in these areas that "never flood"
and i'm being serious b/c i'm ignorant to the cost b/c i don't own a home for this very scenario. i'm not willing to make a $200k+ investment in something over 15-30 years, but that's what a house is. if i did, i'd insure the frick out of it and buy where i could afford it all. again, this isn't an "i told you so" just my perspective on home ownership (that i've posted of since 2007 when we started discussing the mortgage crisis)
and this won't apply to everyone, like nurse's parents, for example

How many earthquakes have occurred in Louisiana in the last 500 years that resulted in massive home damage? Comparing earthquakes to flooding in Louisiana is just not rational.

I'd rather my tax dollars make these people whole than give it to Iran.

I think ours is less than 500 a year in the city of new orleans. It was around 250 in P'ville (neither in a flood zone, neither required)

definitely better spent on productive people who want to put themselves back together rather than those who never want to get off the couch

I don't live in a flood zone. But I live in South Louisiana, which is just a series of bayous, creeks, rivers, etc, interspersed with neighborhoods. So I bought flood insurance. I didn't want to spend that money any more than you or anybody else, but I bought it for that one in a million chance. I would suggest virtually everybody else does too. It's just being responsible and self-reliant in case of catastrophe. Nothing to tell a guy to eat a bag of dicks over.
