The retailers are trying to turn every holiday into Christmas.

What kind of presents and stocking stuffers are you guys buying for St Patrick's Day?

You should do the same thing. Give her a list of things you want. The list should say "1.) Anal."

The married men are going for whats easy. Makes sense. My angle is set the precedent of small gift on vday (a medium between my expectations and hers). I dont want her expecting bday/christmas level shite on a holiday that's not even a holiday.

As was stated above, my preference is flowers and special dinner

If "Dick in a box" isn't on that list you're doing it wrong.

Reasonable, we don't even celebrate V day anymore. We wait til its over and do a little something for each other when that shite is on sale and maybe go out to a nice dinner away from the kid. We started dating a few days after Valentine's, so we claim it's for that reason instead of being cheap.

My initial reaction was wtf. She doesn't get to choose her present. It's supposed to be something I pick out because I think she'll enjoy it/like it. Which is what I'm going to do.

Thoughts?

You don't know shite about women.

You have to do both. Get her only what she told you she wants and you'll be in trouble for not caring enough to know what she might like.

Get her only what you think she wants and you're in trouble for not paying enough attention to know what she asks for.

Yeah, after you're married for a while you just want them to tell you what they want.

Not even this, I buy whatever it I want and she does the same. Much easier that way.

Same here. When we moved into our house my wife was pregnant. Valentines was two weeks from the due date and we just grilled steaks and enjoyed a nice dinner. Since then I think we've been out for Valentine's Day maybe twice in 9 years. Much more enjoyable to let one of our mothers watch the kids for the night and us stay home.

yep. Know how you hate to get a gift you don't want or can't use? Women are even worse about it. They get mad at you for not knowing what they want/need. But they still get pissed if you get them water pills or a treadmill. So you're screwed either way. Might as well let them pick the gift out.

Start a dossier on anyone you will be expected to buy gifts for. Start an Amazon wish list. Anytime you hear them kind of offhandedly say that they'd like something, you put that shite on their list. When it's time to buy a gift, you just go to the list and pick one that fits the occasion.

If it's a random Friday and you'd like to surprise her, you pick the slippers she said she liked. If she caught you banging her sister, you're going to want to go with the tennis bracelet.

Her telling you what she wants simplifies shite; it's the only time shite will be simple with your woman.....cherish the moment.

I learned the hard way. I totally messed up a Christmas gift one year. We were lying in bed and she was reading a magazine. She mentioned some Celine Dion perfume and said she would want a bottle. I didn't pick up on the sarcasm. And this stuff was hard to find. I hit 4 department stores before finally finding it at a JC Penney. I got the little gift set that had the perfume, lotion, maybe some shampoo or shower gel. She opened it Christmas morning when we were at her Mom's house and she literally laughed in my face. But since then, I get explicit instructions on what she wants for her birthday and Christmas. Not so much other times of the year, but she didn't want to get another gift like that, and as a bonus she doesn't joke around about something she doesn't want either.

Wow, you're setting the bar real high with this preference. How is getting her what she actually wants any easier than going with the most clichéd and thoughtless option of dinner and flowers?

So you don't have to put any effort into racking your brain to find a gift, and you're going to get her something you KNOW she'll like?

Sounds like a win to me.
