Ive often wondered if technology and automation will force us into Socialism/Communism. At some point machines will replace so many jobs that the unemployment rate will force resource sharing(socialism). This is almost an irrefutable logical conclusion to the perpetuation of machine technology.
Although I wouldnt mind a Star Trek:TNG world.

it will force us into a UBI, which arguably will save us more than the handouts we give the leeches currently
and at least with a UBI, everyone gets something

Only until after a few elections it's been raised to such a level it's unsustainable.
Because it WILL be raised every election cycle to buy votes.

One of the moral struggles I have from time to time as a mechanical engineer that works with autonomy and embedded systems is the knowledge that at the end of the road, a lot of what you work on may end up costing people their jobs.

Eventually there will have to be some type of balance established, less we let automation take over everything thus destroying the ability to purchase. Poor people can only buy so much.

i mean, it doesnt make me proud to know that thousands of people are going to be losing your jobs in the certain future
but that guy is quite naive to think hes safe because he went into engineering

Were most of the functions of the laid off employees pretty repetitive in nature?
I've always thought that those were the jobs that would be extinct first; the ones where you do the same thing over and over with very little judgment making or generation of new content/ideas.
