Meh, I quit going almost 30 years ago. Just wasn't fun anymore. When I lived there, it was either fishing, golf or, going to the track.

made up holiday called Mardi Gras

Aren't all holidays made up? Also...Fat Tuesday has been a thing in western culture for over 1,000 years. For context, we've only been treating Christmas like a commercial holiday since the 1800s.

don’t get why the Billy Baws north of I-10 have such resentment for Mardi Gras. Louisiana is the only state in this country that puts on a 2 week long party. It’s the single most unique celebration in any of the 50/51 states. I get it’s not for everyone but the hatred people have towards it is silly.
and those same yokels claim that south Louisiana people are insecure about north Louisiana

It’s genuinely hilarious

I enjoy a party, I don't care about catching stuff from parades but my 3 year old enjoys it

I also don't care for Mardi Gras. But I don't give one frick if other people go and enjoy. How miserable a person are you that you have to make a post over something like this. Just don't go.

Which is fine. We almost never did anything for Mardi Gras when we lived in BR either.

But crapping all over it like the OP is kind of dumb. “Oh a bunch of people enjoy something I don’t and I’m glad they’re not anymore”. Dude sounds miserable.

And fun to be around too, huh…?

St Paddy’s day parade is around the corner, see you there, can’t wait to hang out…

Sorry you’re too poor to enjoy the other side of Mardi Gras. The actual ball and less trashy side of the whole holiday.

Anything involving the general public that is free will 100% be trashy almost all the time.

Celebrating life, in all its forms, is what Louisiana does best! Stands out among the world. If you knew from where I type this, I speak with authority. Travel / seen a lot.

Point: Living in LA and not being part of its fabric would be gigantic miss from how I look at life. Don’t have to like MG. Don’t have to like festivals. Don’t have to appreciate its unique and quirky people. But collectively, what the hell are you doing it you put up with its challenges while missing its treasures?

Life is too damned short!

Many people love going to parades, and that's cool. I just got sick of it.

end to agree. It's one of those events that I may enjoy if I was single or had kids.

There's like 3 ways of enjoying it in my opinion.

You love it when you are a little kid. It's easy to see why. It's not the drunken debauchery. It's the outdoors, music, costume, beads, etc..

You then love it when you are in the party years of your life and you enjoy the drunken debauchery.

Then when you have kids and you kind of return to enjoying the first part as you see your kids love it.

I've been to balls, ridden, and all that before I had kids and it was all about drinking to me. I don't drink anymore and live out of state, so kind of stayed away for a while. But now that we have kids, it is a fun time to go back and enjoy the holiday. I never thought I'd enjoy it without drinking, but I do. The one problem is ensuring that you find the family environment that isn't right next to the drunken environment, and that's not always easy. But it is certainly doable.
