Smiley Anders still writes a column in the Baton Rouge Advocate?

I remember reading that when I was a kid. I had to read it out loud while grandma cooked breakfast. Helped me learn to read “good” I suppose.
Some photo of him holding a phone. Real deal journalism. I guess that was his “action” shot. He seemed like a nice enough fella- I just remember Aggie jokes and old people writing in (before email) wishing random people happy birthday. My grandparents loved that column for some reason.
I suppose the guy would have to be in his 80s if he was still alive. My frame of reference was the early 90s.
He still writing for the Advocate? Might have to see if the column stands up.

He’s still there. 130 years old but still just typing away.

Light is doing him no favors.

I still remember as a kid the first time I heard him laugh and looking at my parents kinda panicked because why were they not calling 911 for this choking/asphyxiating person?!
Vv kind man but that laugh

I’ve never heard the man speak. For having read his columns daily for many of the formative years of my life, that’d have been interesting.
Personally, it just seems he puts random crap in there that people sent him. Old people love making the paper though so I guess he was never short on content

In the 90s I told my brother Smiley Anders was the final boss on ocarina of time

He's there telling silly jokes and nostalgic stories just to keep the old suscribers writing checks and mailing in every month.

My dad used to write them an annual check. He was told he could no longer do that. They told him it was a credit card only system now. He tried working his way up the food chain and they all let him know how sorry they were.
It seems as if they would have wanted to keep their subscribers, since they are now reduced to mendicants.
I never met Smiley. I remember his tiny picture in the paper. Back then he looked like Pat from SNL.

Nice enough guy. Short guy. High-pitched voice and a cackle for a laugh that sounds like he’s got a frog stuck in his throat. Actually had an office (not sure if he still does) at the two buildings downtown and at Bluebonnet and that’s rare for anyone editorial or news that’s not the publisher or executive editor. Not sure if that’s still the case because the building off Siegen is much smaller.
When he was on vacation, there would be plenty of phone calls wondering where his column was. That’s why there was usually a blurb in the paper saying he was on vacation. Old people love the guy.

Smart guy. He lets the folks write his columns in a way. He doesn't have to do a lot. Best humor columnist for me are as follows.
Dave Barry
Angus Lind

Smiley and Lewis Grizzard. A breath of fresh air when you were tired of all the gloom and doom in the news papers.

This guy was just funny.
From Georgia, loved his mama and grits, and a dog named Catfish.
Saw him in the Centroplex ~1989/90. Excellent show.
