PLAQUEMINE — Someone broke into Herman Harris’ Maringouin home nearly two years ago and shot him in the head, using a throw pillow from his sofa to muffle the sound of the gunshot.

The trial of his accused killers on conspiracy, murder and racketeering charges began Wednesday, Aug. 5, with opening statements.

“Sit down. Buckle up,” District Attorney Tony Clayton told jurors in the trial of Rilonda Brooks, her brother David Brooks Jr. and accused hit man Johnnie Hicks.

Harris, Clayton said, worked for Rilonda and David Brooks at their trucking company. He got injured on the job in June 2024.

Clayton told jurors Harris was killed because Rilonda Brooks was afraid Harris was going to sue her and the company over that injury.

“It’s about greed,” Clayton said.

Tony Clayton, a DA that puts tPOS away for good.

Tony is quite possibly the best trial lawyer all around in Louisiana (or at least one of). He is amazing at what he does

Tony is the epitome of FAFO as a prosecutor. And one of the nicest people I have ever met in public. Very glad to have him as our DA.

Unique that elected DA's can also have a private law practice outside of their government role.

Every lawsuit in the courthouse is frivolous except your own.

How can a guy with "respect" tattooed on his neck be anything but respectable? It's a shame how the system is working against these pillars of the community.

But that's not relevant here is it? Because we're speaking of him as a prosecutor, not simply a trial lawyer.

You want to know what a defense attorney says when they know their client probably did it, there's tons of evidence against them and nothing supporting their client's innocence?

quote:

“David Brooks made very poor choices,” Jakuback said.

She said the license plate readers, surveillance video and cell phone data can show where people were and who they talked to, but they don’t have critical context that is the crux of determining guilt in this case.

She urged jurors not to believe “the word of a liar” like Lewis.

“Images convey information,” she said. “Images don’t tell you what someone was thinking or planning.”

I think it involves being triple-jointed while indulging in a Mexican Face-hat.

I had the privilege of sitting on one of his jury’s when he was in an interim role in EBR back in the late 90’s. I was very impressed with him way back then.
