You are buying the land, not the house.

It’s what happens when demands outpaces supply.

You can charge whatever you want for a plot of ghetto shite.

Cali would be an awesome place to live if there weren’t so many goddamn people.

It’s because Silicon Valley doesn’t want high rise apartments.

"Haha, who would want to live in the south? It's full of idiot racist rednecks, shitty weather, and low standard of living. I much prefer paying $2500/month for a 500sqft studio apartment with paid parking and homeless people shitting on my street."

Now that I think about it, even in my caricature $2500/month for a studio isn't high enough for Cali.

Can’t imagine building there is cheap either Scruffy. Everyone in Palo Alto is trying to do the same thing

We looked at some places in Mountain View, Palo Alto and Cupertino last year before we bought. But were priced out and had to settle for east bay

This. Their zoning prevents increasing housing stock creating a massive shortage and exploding prices.

My great aunt bought a house in SF in the mid 40s for something like 25k and sold it for 2-3 million when she retired. It wasn't anything special either.

Could get interesting if more people in Silicone Valley start working from home and the need to be close to the office diminishes.

My wife's cousin lives in CA...around LA I think. We sold our 1100 sq ft starter home in Rayne 5 yrs ago for 95K.....he told me I could have gotten at least 1mil for it in the town he lived in....it was sold at that point but I wondered how much it would have cost (and if it was even possible) to move it to CA ....although like someone else said the land itself would have probably eaten up all he profits.

I feel like there’s an extra zero here somewhere.

Her 1,000 sqft house is selling for $14,000,000?

I've shared this before but this in front of the house I grew up in Palo Alto. My dad paid the rent by working the floor of a lumber yard:

*and what you can't see is there's a busy railroad behind the back yard that shakes the whole house every 20 mins.
