I've often wondered how the janitor/service industry types afford to live in these areas. Is the unskilled labor pay that much higher, or are they living with 5 or 6 roommates and splitting the rent or mortgage?

When I opened this thread about real estate in Silicon Valley, I thought “if only someone would show a comparably priced home in a completely unrelated part of the country. You know, like Alaska. Because that would be super relevant.”

I work with two distributors when I go into that area. They both drive in from Modesto and Turlock. I always have to meet them at about 630am in San Jose. They leave their house early and wrap the day up about 3pm to start heading home.
I couldn't do it.
Love the Santa Cruz area though. I could easily retire there.

Now that I think about it, even in my caricature $2500/month for a studio isn't high enough for Cali.
I grew up in Hawaii and California; I live in Kentucky now. Why? Because I could buy a house for $150,000 without any issue, and have more house and yard than a million dollar home in California. Nah!

dude, there was literally a broken down shack, that people were in a bidding war for, so they could build on that piece of land in San fran.
It was at 2mil, and still rising at the time. You could of probably put a house with 600 square feet on there.

In Houston the people complaining about sprawl the most are the same ones complaining about gentrification.

I'm from San Francisco. All my friends are just waiting to inherit their parents homes. You have a lot of people in San Francisco just sitting on old money, then you have tech workers making gigantic amounts of cash overspending. Compile that with the city can't stand up to activists to build UP and establish more living areas. It takes forever for anything to get moving and pass in California. It has to go through way more channels of approval than say a Texas or Louisiana.
