The outer thingy is threaded on the inside and the inner thingamabob is screwed into it. You need a thingamabob socket to unscrew it.
Probably one of these

I know a couple guys that for a few hundred bucks will show up with gas cans and help with the insurance forms later too.

One other thing you can do is remove the shower. It looks like a simple one piece unit. It's probably just glued in with liquid nail

The last time I had to replace a cartridge like that, I had to put a lot of force into pulling just to get it to budge. Really thought I might be damaging the pipes in the wall, but that’s how much force it took.

Should I enlarge the hole around the brass fitting? The pic is zoomed in...the fitting is probably only
1 1/4” in diameter. The trim is about 5”, so I could cut a bigger hole and still be able to cover it up with the trim.
Best method to cut this plastic?

Was trying my best to avoid all of that

Then, that center hole in the shaft will most likely have a tool out there to remove it.
A piece with slide in and you will either be able too pull it out or it will spin out.
If it’s on an exterior wall, once that piece comes out, should be easy to replace.
Sounds easy in theory but i am pretty positive i remember seeing a tool used for that once upon a time.

Circle cutter. Should be in the box store near the HVAC stuff. A hole saw bit has a center drill bit that might be a problem. I circle cutter with a sharp blade is all you need for that enclosure.

Umm.
Turn the water off to the house before your mess with it.
this ^^^^^^
the center part comes out as a replaceable cartridge but it also releases full water pressure from hot and cold lines when its removed.
call a plumber to come fix it unless you want to have to call them to replace the entire assembly after you strip the threads or break the pipes inside the wall.
you need special tools and an understanding of how they come apart to fix those things
and make your dick head friend pay the repair bill because its not going to be cheap, just the replacement cartridge alone is most likely $50 then add $200-$300 labor

I guess I need to enlarge the hole first to see if there is a retainer clip.

Waiting on updates. I know you didn't go to bed with the job half done.

His shower valve looks too old to have a retaining clip like in the youtube video
