Hmm weird my dad yelled at me plenty as a child but never molested or abused me and I turned out fine and am very close to my father.

This is bullshite and more attempts by media and the left to destroy civilized society. Children need discipline if they’re going to become respectable, productive adults.

So I need to figure out a polite way to tell my 17 year old he is being a total a-hole.

What about not shouting or disciplining then at all? Seems to be the way everyone is pushing. Always giving children what they want and not disciplining them has serious long term negative effects.

CNN: it’s perfectly safe to cut off the genitals of children.

Also CNN: Rising your voice to a child is as harmful as beating or raping them.

Kids not listening when told a first or even second time are harmful to the mental well-being of adults.

I hate yelling at my kids. But if I never yelled at them, I would imagine they would have zero discipline or respect for authority. If that were the case I don’t see how I could be considered a good parent.

All kids should be screamed at and beat.

Beatings are healthy.

When they get older the father should be around to punch them in the mouth. A lot of little shtts have never been punched in the mouth.

Go figure that this trailer trash gets upvoted

This is why parents should not be allowed to raise children. Only the State should be allowed to raise children.

The State knows what's best for everyone.

This is sarcasm from me, but there are quite a few progressive "leaders" out there who think exactly this, and are very serious about it. The nuclear family must be dismantled in their world view.

Better to whoop them with a belt. Saves your voice.

As a parent that did my fair share of shouting, I think there might be something to this. I think spanking is a lot less harmful than people think and screaming is a lot more harmful than people think.

Agreed.

out of curiosity. young parent asking experienced parent. i assume your children each respond differently to how you treat their bad behavior?

Absolutely. You have to be fair and consistent, but that doesn’t mean you treat them the same in terms of the method of correction. One of ours was tender hearted and all you had to do was speak sternly (not even raising your voice very much). The other needed physical touch (literally like grabbing their arm to turn them around toward you) to get their attention before they would even pay attention at all. That one got more yelling/spankings.

However, I agree with a couple of other posters. Consistently yelling at a kid is worse for them than a spanking here and there. Spanking (not all the time and not beating) is easily associated with a specific action/behavior to be corrected. When you yell at your kids all the time it is har for them not to internalize that and interpret it as “there’s something wrong with me”.

Having said that- this study is bullshite the way it is presented in the media.

On one hand that sounds great.

On the other, I would never leave the house.
