i say we start with GOM.
we should just dig a trench maybe a 1/2 mile off the coast...can be like a moat with the opposite effect

We basically let NO East go. Louisiana is sinking.
Maybe we should raise the minimum flood elevation 6' and let most of LP and AP go. Otherwise, through FEMA, we will be paying for years to keep fixing all this stuff.
Let it go?
1. LP and AP are largely above sea level.
2. 90% of da east is not
and da east was dying before katrina

The elevation of Louisiana IS dropping. Sea levels ARE rising. It is an elevation problem.

Nah just make everyone who got flooded buy flood insurance and not be able to drop it just because they're cheap as frick. A lot of people who flooded dropped their insurance because they couldn't sweat paying that big bad $350 a year.
But no we should definitely rebuild. However accountability standards need to be a little higher or like you said, we'll be paying for it through FEMA.

policy should reward northward migration to even higher ground.
How far north? Canada?
Do a quick Google search on record flooding for northern states, let's say TN and northward.

1000 year storm. Should we design buildings to withstand tornados and tsunamis or any other natural disaster? Should we cut down all the trees out west in fear of forest fires?
What they can do is build the diversion canal and upper Amite resovoir. That would have helped things tremendously.

don't question br, he's the queen of googling. he finds enough information to make himself look like an uneducated dickhead.

My 4 wheeler and hunting season will be fine.
If you are suggesting it is a financial burden on the country to assist in rebuilding these areas, let's talk about everything that is supported by the government, and which have a higher rate of return.

Truth is, I think FEMA will raise flood elevations for A and AE zones by at least 3 feet.
FEMA teams have been here since before the rain started, and they are looking at the maps now.
All flood insurance is paid by the Federal Government and too much is being paid out for low premiums.
This will make most undeveloped land cost-prohibitive to develop anyway and force north-westward migration.

well banks do mandate wind and fire coverage always... flood should be no different, very simple.

Stanislaus.
The pic is out there. That's not the point.
Everybody south of I-10 is at risk now. That's the OP's point. Imagine if a tropical storm was hitting this weekend. And another one in a month when you're gutting you flooded house.
It's a fair thread. That's my point.

I remodeled the old post office house in Pearlington for a year and a half. I lived in it for 2 weeks before Katrina hit it.
It was picked up off the piers and thrown 100 ft north of where it was built.
Sorry I didn't stick around and take pics for your retarded arse back in 2005.

It's a very fair thread.
The 1,000 year flood could happen 3 years in a row. It's a matter of percentages, not time.
Hurricanes are another set of percentages, totally independent of flooding.
And the odds of each occurring are rising.
Apparently, some kids that post on this board missed school on those days.

1000 year storm.
This shite needs to die.
NASA and the NOAA just released a statement that July was the warmest month on record for the globe, and makes the 14th straight month that has been the warmest on record. Many people dismiss it because records only go back to like the 1880s, and they're right. The same mindset should be had with these 500-year events and 1000 year events. There isn't nearly enough information available to make such claims. (I'm aware 1000-year means .1%, not once every 1000 years)
