Yeah they should legalize it, it'd probably put a couple of pharmaceutical companies out of business too. You can even use hemp oil from marijuana to run your car.

Absolutely, but the state GOP will not get behind it until the federal government loosens their restrictions.
There is a metro council vote at city hall at 4:00pm tomorrow to decriminalize marijuana in Baton Rouge (will only be charged with a ticket) similar to what New Orleans did. I would invite all of you who live in EBR to call your local councilman and/or show up in support of the measure at the meeting.

I hadn't heard of this. Interesting. In NOLA it's at the officer's discretion. Same with this one, or is this for all minor possession under a certain amount?

Sure, pot legalization would provide jobs IN THAT INDUSTRY. But if people are switching their consumer spending from another industry to the pot industry, that means those other industries will see a loss of jobs.

OP, why do you stay here? Your open contempt for this place is toxic. Yet your still here.
Do you just love being miserable or is your disgust contrived?
I stay here for two reasons; 1. I work here and own a home here. 2. My wife is in a graduate program here and I will be entering one in the Fall.
After those two things are completed, then we are very much considering leaving. I apologize that I don't have your 'bury my head in the sand and ignore things' mentality. Also, this thread has very little to do with my overall disdain for Louisiana's corrupt history, but more addresses what I would say is an opportunity for the state to capitalize where it can. We all know that Louisiana desperately needs to diversify its economy. Oil is not doing us any favors at the moment.
It would be a very smart idea to legalize weed, and i'm not even a pot head. I've smoked maybe 5 times in my life and those were years ago. I grew up in Louisiana and obviously want the state to be successful. I get sick of hearing only negative connotations for this state, but we have to be able to call a spade a spade and actually give the college-educated individuals in this state a reason to stay. Why do you think a majority of college graduates from Louisiana are living in Texas? Give us an opportunity to be successful here, and more will stay.

To a degree, perhaps, but imagine the increased tourism $$$ from being the only city in a 500 mile radius where you can openly smoke. The state could use a few less Yeti coolers anyway.

I can't recall reading an article of someone being arrested for pot in Louisiana
Just because it didn't make the news doesn't mean it didn't happen.
I would say pot is one of the number one things people are arrested for.

Most of those consumers are already buying pot off the black market. They're moving from consuming it illicitly to legally. Rather than employing sketchy dealers, they're creating above the board businesses. You're improving quality. You're introducing tort protections for consumers. You're allowing a legal forum to settle business disputes which greatly curtails the violence. Finally, the government is collecting sales taxes on transactions that prior were going unrecorded.

Yes. But they'll probably be the last state to do so. The medical program is retarded limited. When it passed, I had an older lady coworker who swore medical marijuana was going to bring on Armageddon. We have some backward arse ignorant people in this state who somehow still have say so over shite.

It should be left up to the states to decide for themselves.
If a majority of people in this state vote to legalize then legalize it. If they don't, then keep it illegal.
They would have to come up with a test that would determine you don't have it in your system during work hours, otherwise your employer will just fire you for breaking the company drug policy.

While I really have no problem with legalization of pot, I think the dollar figures that you cite in your post are inflated as shite. I am pretty familiar with Colorado and can say that I haven't seen any effect at all resulting from this "$23.9 Billion" impact on the state's coffers. They still have all of the same taxes that anywhere else has.

I think it should, and before the 3 surrounding states. We could probably get quite a bit of tax money from TX alone. Spend more money on education, infrastructure, and law enforcement. And maybe even start to lower some taxes.
If we had better schools, which over time hopefully would produce more educated kids, we could convince more companies to invest in LA.

Yeah those numbers are bullshite but it would have a positive effect on the economy. MJ taxation, less spending on LEO to pop kids for a couple Gs of weed, less drug violence, and less people in jail for non violent crime.
I don’t smoke weed either but I think it would help the state.

Good points.
The only negatives I could see are the Church crowds rising up, but they’re cool with Louisiana’s alcohol culture. If nothing else, weed might actually curtail the alcohol abuse in this state a good bit.

Sessions is increasing federal law on marijuana. Too many state troopers who follow that. Private prisons, old power structure, etc

I agree, drinking is all I would do...but I don't have an issue if someone else wants pot. Why can't someone else have a different fix than you....
