Might as well swing for the fences. Sorry baws but oil and gas doesn't seem to be recovering at the rate everyone projected (wishful thinking) it would. The state needs to do something to diversify its economic output or continue drowning.

New Orleans' loves to market itself as a "sin" city and is damn proud of its taboo lifestyles. Seems to be a perfect set-up for an "Amsterdam of the south" marketability. What's the down side? I know Joel Osteens of the state won't like it but it is what it is...

Aside from the religious argument (which is bullshite because you're cool with alcohol) convince me why Louisiana shouldn't legalize weed

Article on the economic impact on Colorado (from 2016)

quote:

Colorado’s burgeoning legal marijuana industry has quickly made gains on the state’s largest industries — including the mighty oil-and-gas sector — and contributed an economic impact of $2.39 billion in 2015, according to research released Tuesday.

The cannabis industry, the fastest-growing business sector in the state, also is credited with funding 18,005 direct and ancillary full-time jobs in 2015, according to the report from the Marijuana Policy Group, a Denver-based economic and market research firm that consults with businesses and governments on marijuana policy.

MPG, which was founded by researchers from BBC Research & Consulting and the University of Colorado but is unaffiliated with those entities, developed a “marijuana impact model” to show how legalization affects the state economy in the areas of output, tax revenue, GDP and employment.

MPG self-funded the report.

“By legalizing, the state has gained a windfall more or less for free,” said Miles Light, one of the report’s authors.

Meh, take baby steps and get rid of our stupid arse three tier alcohol distribution system and open up the market to be much more free for micro breweries and those kind of places first.

Completely agree. The only thing keeping us from several billion a year is the bible thumpers and the sheriffs who are terrified it'll hurt their income.

Yes we should, but it will never happen with the power of the Sheriff's lobby here.

Legalize it only in casinos. That way, the religious folks can pseudo-oppose it, while reaping the tax benefits.

Not when garbage like fully paid trips to Sandestin go on. Lopinto became Newell Normand's successor after he left. Newell Normand is the buffoon who cursed at the legislature in 2016 during the debates leading up to the LA medical marijuana bill, which basically allows only marijuana oil in pill form.

"State Rep. Joe Lopinto sponsored a bill last year that called for millions of dollars in new annual revenue for sheriffs across Louisiana. The measure provided reimbursements to local sheriffs housing state inmates who had been released on parole and re-arrested. Subject to appropriation, the estimated annual cost of the expanded reimbursements is $15.3 million, according to the nonpartisan legislative fiscal office.

The bill became law in July. A few weeks later, Lopinto spent six days at the Hilton Sandestin Beach golf resort in Destin, Fla., courtesy of the Louisiana Sheriffs' Association.

The Sheriffs' Association picked up Lopinto's $2,292 tab, which included travel and admission to the association's annual training conference at the resort. It was the single-largest lobbyist expense on an individual reported since 2009, according to a NOLA.com"

Legalization of pot won't help Louisiana.

Maybe if you legalized murder it would.

That state is fricked up.

I can't recall reading an article of someone being arrested for pot in Louisiana.

They tend to leave you alone unless you have some assets that can be seized under legalized theft laws... aka civil asset forfeiture.

Perhaps not from a CJ perspective initially. There's plenty of career criminals in Louisiana to keep our incarceration rates through the roof (and it aint cause of weed) It's cause of 'dat murdaaaaaa'

Anyway, that additional few billion in revenue could certainly go towards rehabilitating those poor, disenfranchised youth that were never given a chance at success...

I meant that sort of tongue in cheek, but another CAF is another secondary reason for why marijuana is kept illegal.

No.

Louisiana is a shite hole state with fewer and fewer redeeming qualities. The Bible thumpers up north would fight it tooth and nail. That’s not even factoring the decade or two it would take for every politician in the state to make sure their personal and political interests are served with a cut of the tax revenue.

By that time, any semi-intelligent person old enough to vote will have probably already moved to another state that isn’t a smoldering shite pile.

Financially, it would actually be a very smart move. Could take that taxed money and throw it back to the city on actual physical improvements to building and roads that don't take 4 years to put together.

What does someone being arrested for pot have to do with pot helping to improve the state?
