I don't have a problem with a second place trophy (or third maybe), as long as the first place one is noticeably better and distinguishes itself as the clear winner.
As for participation trophies, I'm generally against the idea, but I don't see the harm in small children getting one as long as they know what it's for and the "winners" clearly get rewarded with a bigger/better trophy.
ONce they're older than about 7 though, nah.

Sure. Why not? Achievement is not really special. Winning is not really special. Feeling special is special. And we want all our really special people to feel really special as they embark on a special life of EBT cards and welfare checks. Yeah errybody!

Most kids understand that first place and winning is the prize and that participation trophies aren't the goal. Getting a participation trophy isn't going to affect them like some people like to claim.
It's up to the adults to teach kids to compete to their potential regardless of the opponent and understand that you don't always win.

I believe in giving them something that recognizes that they did the work and were dedicated to being part of the team, but -
It's a good way to show kids that hard work has merit, even if you're not in the top 3.

Definitely agree with that. When I was a kid in sports, sometimes we got trophies for playing ball, and I didn't cherish those like I did the ones for first place and whatnot.

No. Kids learn that you don't always get rewarded for your hard work and that hard work doesnt always guarantee success. It motivates them to work harder. If kids flip out over failure we can blame the parents for not teaching this valuable life lesson.

Do you really see much of that these days other than the really young kids? And is that any worse than the 6.5 foot tall trophies and rings being handed out in kids baseball? Kids are getting rings for winning some shitty baseball tournaments every weekend. And the trophies have become an absolute joke. There is something seriously screwed up when you need a truck to get the trophy home.

My 8 yr old just recently took it upon himself to pack up his participation trophies and leave out only his accomplishment trophies. I was very impressed and proud.

Both sides can be equally destructive.
If you baby your children and don't let them experience defeat that can hurt them.
However if you are the type of parent who makes it where winning is the ONLY thing and punish/yell at your kid if they lose regardless of the effort they gave that can also hurt your child.
Win at all cost parents are just as bad as the ones who shelter their kids.
