I used to coach youth football and while losing the championship game sucked arse, I was so proud of my team when they were presented 2nd place trophies and most of them threw them away or declined them.

Sounds like a sugar coated way of saying you kid plays like a pussy.
But, in football, kids get letters regardless of how much the team sucks, so even your pussy kid likely got one.
In any case, I'd rather give kids some token of recognition rather than have most of them go away believing that no matter how hard they work, if they don't place, it's all for nothing.

Up to a certain age, yes imo. (like 7-8)
ps - to clarify - Im talking about a participation trophy with the actual champs getting a larger trophy.
Exactly

So why not just give out trophies when it does matter to the kids? I say at that age just go out for pizza or something.
That's my point, at that age tt doesn't matter. 99% of them don't have a clue as to the score (if they even keep score) so giving them a trophy won't hurt them, same as giving them a pizza party.
If everyone gets trophies at that age no one is getting hurt.
Keep in mind most youth T-ball leagues don't even keep score so there isn't a "champion" anyway.
One of the worst events I have ever worked was when I officiated a 5-6 year old "All Star T-Ball" tournament. Kids were having fun and had very little awareness of what was going on. The kids didn't care at all about the score (most wanted to chase their shadow).
The parents were going nuts on "missed calls" and even saw a few parents get ejected including one mom who got arrested for throwing a bottle over the fence cursing us out about a call. It was quite pathetic as the parents were getting really emotional about something their kids didn't care about.
They were going that nuts just hoping their kid could take home a cheap plastic trophy. Was the most pathetic display I've ever seen and I've refused to work another tournament like that again.

I don't have a problem with it

No. If you always get a trophy, then you never learn how to lose gracefully.

Who competes for a lame trophy? You know who won and who lost.

Ages 5 and below, yes every child should get a trophy. I think when a child receives a trophy at that age, it gives them a sense of pride and accomplishment. It will hopefully encourage the kids to remain active and to keep going. However, as others have stated, the ACTUAL team that won should get a larger trophy.
From ages 6 and up, they should understand the difference between winning and losing and if they lose, they should understand that you can have fun, but they need to try harder.

Kids shouldn't be playing sports anyway, only 0.00001% of them will use those skills at a professional level. We should be teaching our children to change oil filters and weld, not kick and catch balls.
This is why China is beating us at everything.
I am personally a fan of giving the lowers a small participation plaque. Trophies are for fricking winners. As pointed out earlier, you don't get shite for losing in the real world. Kids need to get accustomed to that early so they strive to win when they are adults, and are prepared to know and handle failure rather than just fricking lose it or shut down the minute they don't get their participation trophy.

Here is my take on trophies.
A trophy given at a year end team banquet at some team/family gathering fine up to about age 12. The kids look forward to getting the team participation trophy that acknowledges they played on that particular team.
I frown on organizations that hand out consolation trophies and rings for 2nd place or worse at competitive events/tourneys. That is a stupid message to send. Only the champion of the event/tourney deserves the trophy or ring for that event.

No. It defeats the purpose of what a goal achieved represents.
And it's retarded.
