Remember the person who's paying you lost work days also.

If you work for a company that makes you take vacation for a natural disaster you should put in your two weeks notice today.
frick that.
frick that.

Expect? Nope. Grateful if they did? Yep.
This is why I always hang on to a few days of vacation in case something unexpected comes up.
Well, that's just selfless of you and shows responsibility, and we can't have too much of that around here anymore. You must whine and complain more, and consider protests and lawsuits in your next venture.
God bless you and the many others who think like you. This is the attitude we should all have not taking advantage of anyone and thinking of others before ourselves. The world would be a much nicer place. Now take back the soap box.

Especially if your job did not go under and continued normal operations. would you expect them to comp the days you missed to take care of your home, family or friends home, or even just trying to help out?

A better question than the OP: do you expect your company to pay you for time missed if they cancelled the work day on Monday?

Updating your resume yet?

Same here. It's not like i didn't WANT to come in on Monday, it's the fact that i couldn't safely get here. Not only that, but the roads were closed. Didn't seem like a vacation to me

The first day back (Tuesday) we had a meeting where the company announced that no leave would be charged to anyone that is in and out this week. We had some folks that lost everything, so charging personal time while they try to sort things out would have been a really bad look.
It is a great gesture, but charging personal time to take care of personal things is not a bad look.

I worked for a national company that was more local here in se la in 05. Had to evacuate for Katrina. Wasn't back for about 3 weeks due to no power. I got paid for the entire 3 weeks. The first week I could not work since we didn't have power where I evacuated. The next two weeks I worked how I could. Wasn't a full day each day but I helped out. When I got back my grandmaw lost everything and she moved in with me but had to make sure her house got gutted cleaned and then we had to move the stuff that made it out or throw it out. That meant taking a full day off of maybe leaving early or coming in late. My mom was in Mississippi and my brother overseas and my grandpaw had died 6 years earlier so it was all on me. I lost some stuff too but nothing like my grandmaw. She passed away last year and from 05 till she died she was never the same.
Sorry to go off on a tangent. I appreciated what the company did for me and allowed me to do what I needed to do without fear of losing my job.

If you work for a company that won't pay you for not being there you should put your two weeks notice in? For a place that bitches about entitlement as much as the OT, most of you are hypocrites.

This was an act of God. Discuss it with "him/her".
P.S. Your statement indicates a true sense of entitlement.

It's nice to see some employers taking care of their employees and communities instead of bitching about curfews and lost income. I know of several business that are paying their employees to help elderly and disabled folks clean up their homes. Those businesses aren't making a nickel off of that.

Check back in when you figure out how the real world works. Most small businesses do not have the ability to pay workers when no work is being done. Workers generate income that allows workers to get paid. You have no idea how many small businesses are going to go under because of this event.

I agree with many in the thread.
If it is a national chain/brand that can continue operations (and income streams) while the tragedy is ongoing, then yes.
If it is a small business that has ZERO income for lost days, plus money lost to rebuild the office due to flooding, plus likely lost employees due to relocation...then absolutely not.
The owner of the small business is hurting just as much as the employees and is not a villain in this scenario.

My company has been very good to me and very flexible during this event.
Every time they ask me to stay late or work a weekend, I won't forget about how they have given me paid money and very flexible schedule to work through him this.

I'm guessing you mean your employer, which owns/operates a business? a "job" doesn't give anything.
It would be nice, but what an employer "should" do is make prudent business decisions so that it stays solvent, giving the employees an opportunity to continue to work their if they choose.
This may or may not include paying employees that were unable to report to work.

My yard crew has been unable to cut my lawn this week because of the weather. Should I still pay them for the week?

quote:Yeah, that's what grinds my gears. There's a lady in our office that lives in an area that has basically been closed off because she can't get out on the roads because they're all closed around her. She's fine, her family is fine, but she just can't get out. She hasn't been to work all week because she physically can't get here. So she has to use 40 hours of vacation?

That's really shitty. And it builds no goodwill between the employee and the firm.
