It really is sad to see how quickly people jump for handouts & favors. It baffles me how many people try to take advantage of their employers.

UPDATE: Our office is now recanting making us use vacation time and are instead giving us paid absence. Thanks, Obama. Or whatever.

I'm sure the people that lost everything would gladly trade having a few extra paid days off to not have lost everything.

My office is in Gonzales and we re-opened Tuesday, but our CEO is very sympathetic to the needs of the employees, especially for those who can't make it to work even though we are technically open.

My office is off of Sherwood. "Because the office didn't sustain any damage" we were open Monday and told to either "try to navigate our way to work" or use PTO.

I almost got stuck in water on Sherwood. Texted my supervisor a pic of the water over the road in front of the 4000 building. He told me to go home, but I worked from home because he asked me to (and he was nice about it). He wasn't the one that made the call to force everyone to come in to work.

They finally decided yesterday afternoon that if employees were not able to leave their houses, they wouldn't be charged pto. I still think it's a dick move to tell 100 employees to try to navigate your way to work. We are a very large nationwide company.

Eta: if he would have closed the office, everyone would have been paid and not have to use pto. That's why he wouldn't close the office.

Yea, that's pretty stupid given the extent of the flooding. Especially if you can perform your work from home, which it seems you were able to.

I'm not baffled by any of it, I just want people to acknowledge the hypocritical nature of it all.

Government benefits are lambasted on this site, and rightfully so, but now that mom, grandma, or the poster themselves needs help because they gambled and lost on flood insurance, it is justified.

ETA: This is just another example of what people think they deserve.

They made the employees that were trapped at home by water text pics for proof.

I lost a lot of respect for our VP this week. This company has over 20,000 employees nationwide.

Comparing government benefits handed out to leeches to victims of a natural disaster is such a typical you move.

A few months back when Houston got hit hard, the company I work for took care of the 1st week for those that were effected.

My company did the same thing.

But not for us. They finally decided yesterday afternoon to pay those that were stuck and not make them use their pto. Buy they only did it for Monday and Tuesday.

As if the people paying the employees didn't get hit either? That's just stupid. Maybe these people should be a little more responsible and not stretch their money so thin. They'd be more prepared when uncontrollable disasters happen.

Probably, it is hard to remember what entitled thread is what since this weekend.

What people think they deserve has skyrocketed since the rain started to fall.

The only way this makes any kind of sense is if they don't have the ability in HR to properly monitor that kind of thing. Even then, that sucks.

It's not a small company. They have the ability, but some a-hole is either too stubborn or too lazy to make it happen.

I wouldn't expect it or demand it. However, if the company doesn't treat me well then it would be alot harder to keep me around when another offer came along.

My general rule is this, I give what I can give to the company. If I can stay late, ill make time to stay late and help get things done, or come in on a weekend and help then I will. However, since I do that I would expect some decency if I have a personal emergency to take care of.

I feel if the company takes care of me as an employee, then I would give them any chance to match an offer from somewhere else.

If the company doesn't try to take care of an employee as best they can despite me giving best effort, then I would take another offer in a heart beat.

I think it all comes down to treating others how you want to be treated. Some companies burn through employees and don't worry about treating them well and they still make good profits. Others treat employees like people and they make profits.

Damn that is fricked up.

Maybe they're worried there will be an overwhelming amount of support and they end up with people abusing the system. Idk.

I agree as long as people understand what qualifies as being treated well and what is more of a pie in the sky idea of how they should be treated. I don't immediately side with the employer, but alot of these grievances are impractical for many small businesses.

Nah, it's probably just too much of a hassle for some HR person so they said screw it. They did say they were trying to raise money for people affected. I'm not in that situation so I can't say how I would feel if it happened to me but I would rather take the PTO than accept money. Of course, they'll probably get a couple hundred bucks from the company but lose 5k in lost wages.
