Especially if your job did not go under and continued normal operations. would you expect them to comp the days you missed to take care of your home, family or friends home, or even just trying to help out?

Remember the person who's paying you lost work days also.

It would be an awesome gesture from an employer and would build goodwill.

I would not want to see it mandated by law.

My wife is a nurse, her job is paying all employees as if they worked 8 hrs shifts everyday this week. Mine only missed Monday

Only if you had unused pto. Why would they need to be obligated for your personal affairs?

If they are kind hearted, maybe they won't shite can you for failing to show up for work. That would be a nice gesture in today's world.

not mandatory, but it sure is nice. when Katrina hit, the company i worked for continued paying everyone 40hrs a week until they could come back to work. I was out for a month and never missed a paycheck

Expect? Nope. Grateful if they did? Yep.

This is why I always hang on to a few days of vacation in case something unexpected comes up.

Any decent person receiving this should feel immediately obligated to work weekends until it is earned, IMO.

Everyone expects gestures of good will from businesses. Why don't we expect it from employees as well?

What if the employer suffered losses from the flood, should the employees give back their earnings to help? Seems fair to me.

It cuts both ways. Is it the type of business where employees do things that aren't required to help the company?

I have had both types of employees, ones that bend over backwards and act like the company is theirs (do anything for them) and the ones that are out the door at 4:59 every day no matter what. The latter are good folks and all but they are employees and not part of the family.

No. That being said, if your place of business is actively telling people to volunteer and help fellow employees that have been affected, you're damn right they should.

The first day back (Tuesday) we had a meeting where the company announced that no leave would be charged to anyone that is in and out this week. We had some folks that lost everything, so charging personal time while they try to sort things out would have been a really bad look.

If it's only location shut down due to flooding then no. I got paid for three weeks after Katrina until I went back but we were national

So people should only help out others if they are paid to do so?

Nice...

So the company should take credit for employees helping each other and the community out and have zero skin in the game? Nice.

It is one thing to have a generic statement saying we understand if you help people out. It's another to actively tell employees where they can volunteer during work hours and plead with them to help fellow employees. It's also not shift work.

I'm a consultant so each week I have to bill my time to certain projects in assigned to. This week my employer set up a flood project for everyone to bill to if we either were taking care of our own home or helping out a coworker. Pretty nice gesture. That way we could take care of personal matters or volunteer for someone else and not have to use our PTO.

My place of work has a contingency plan if I and my co-workers drop dead so they don't miss one day of production so any warm and fuzzier I felt about being special are out the door. With that being said, I think 3-4 weeks of vacation is pretty standard on top of personal days and stuff for most employees. Not me though. I get none paid :(
