That's why I said PPE would be required.

Did Obama really say "We are responsible for this"? I'm reading that on another forum.

Here is the speech in its entirety

quote:

THE PRESIDENT: Today, as Americans, we grieve the brutal murder—a horrific massacre—of dozens of innocent people. We pray for their families, who are grasping for answers with broken hearts. We stand with the people of Orlando, who have endured a terrible attack on their city. Although it’s still early in the investigation, we know enough to say that this was an act of terror and an act of hate. And as Americans, we are united in grief, in outrage, and in resolve to defend our people.

I just finished a meeting with FBI Director Comey and my homeland security and national security advisors. The FBI is on the scene and leading the investigation, in partnership with local law enforcement. I’ve directed that the full resources of the federal government be made available for this investigation. We are still learning all the facts. This is an open investigation.

We’ve reached no definitive judgment on the precise motivations of the killer. The FBI is appropriately investigating this as an act of terrorism. And I’ve directed that we must spare no effort to determine what—if any—inspiration or association this killer may have had with terrorist groups. What is clear is that he was a person filled with hatred. Over the coming days, we’ll uncover why and how this happened, and we will go wherever the facts lead us.

This morning I spoke with my good friend, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, and I conveyed the condolences of the entire American people. This could have been any one of our communities. So I told Mayor Dyer that whatever help he and the people of Orlando need—they are going to get it. As a country, we will be there for the people of Orlando today, tomorrow and for all the days to come. We also express our profound gratitude to all the police and first responders who rushed into harm’s way.

Their courage and professionalism saved lives, and kept the carnage from being even worse. It’s the kind of sacrifice that our law enforcement professionals make every single day for all of us, and we can never thank them enough. This is an especially heartbreaking day for all our friends—our fellow Americans—who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. The shooter targeted a nightclub where people came together to be with friends, to dance and to sing, and to live.

The place where they were attacked is more than a nightclub—it is a place of solidarity and empowerment where people have come together to raise awareness, to speak their minds, and to advocate for their civil rights. So this is a sobering reminder that attacks on any American—regardless of race, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation—is an attack on all of us and on the fundamental values of equality and dignity that define us as a country. And no act of hate or terror will ever change who we are or the values that make us Americans. Today marks the most deadly shooting in American history. The shooter was apparently armed with a handgun and a powerful assault rifle.

This massacre is therefore a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon that lets them shoot people in a school, or in a house of worship, or a movie theater, or in a nightclub. And we have to decide if that’s the kind of country we want to be. And to actively do nothing is a decision as well. In the coming hours and days, we’ll learn about the victims of this tragedy.

Their names. Their faces. Who they were. The joy that they brought to families and to friends, and the difference that they made in this world. Say a prayer for them and say a prayer for their families—that God give them the strength to bear the unbearable. And that He give us all the strength to be there for them, and the strength and courage to change. We need to demonstrate that we are defined more—as a country—by the way they lived their lives than by the hate of the man who took them from us. As we go together, we will draw inspiration from heroic and selfless acts—friends who helped friends, took care of each other and saved lives. In the face of hate and violence, we will love one another. We will not give in to fear or turn against each other. Instead, we will stand united, as Americans, to protect our people, and defend our nation, and to take action against those who threaten us. May God bless the Americans we lost this morning. May He comfort their families. May God continue to watch over this country that we love. Thank you.

Really? So the president has confirmation that it was an M4 and not an AR15? But those are illegal!?

"Assault rifles" account for an extremely minor percentage of gun deaths.

That's what cracks me up about liberals like Piers Morgan an Whoopie Goldberg when they say they don't want to ban handguns despite the fact that they're responsible for the overwhelming majority of gun deaths.

Those dipshites are really into symbolic gestures as opposed to actually addressing the problems because that would be racist or classist or just generally might hurt some snowflakes' feelings

Okay? But are they responsible for mass killings at a single time like this type of event?

You really don't understand their reasoning? You aren't somewhat pleased such ridiculous liberals like them at least don't want to ban all guns?

Of course handguns would be the majority of gun deaths. They are the majority of owned no? Many are also suicides as well.. and many of these deaths are probably personally related..

These automatic type of weapons seem like an easier way, especially for a less skilled person, to inflict far more damage on innocent people.. I am not saying I am against them, but I at least understand what their point is. I don't personally like guns, but I don't want to take people's right to defend themselves. Ever.

See Virginia Tech

quote:

It's flawed reasoning. They don't know anything about guns or gun death statistics. They see a single tragedy and want to ban that particular weapon yet completely ignore the real mass killing weapon. That's like saying we need to focus all our medical efforts on fighting the Zika virus while heart disease continues to kill more Americans than any other disease.

quote:

Of course handguns would be the majority of gun deaths. They are the majority of owned no? Many are also suicides as well.. and many of these deaths are probably personally related..

Suicides should not be counted as "gun violence" statistics (they account for 2/3 of the "gun violence stats). So you don't think the weapon used to kill the most people annually should be banned but the weapon that kills 5% of people annually should be? Are the people's lives taken by semiauto rifles worth more than those taken with handguns?

quote:

Automatic weapons are very, very, very heavily regulated. I'm going to go out on a limb and say the weapon used her was not automatic as they are extremely hard to acquire. I don't want to take away people's right to defend themselves either. That's why I made that post.

I think that's a large misconception. People think that most police are steely eyed gun slingers that burn through a massive amount of ammo each year practicing.

This superior training allows them to do things with a weapon that most normal people can't. It's simply not true and shouldn't be perpetuated.

I think your average guy that shoots at least one competitions each year could out shoot 80% of the police force if not more.

A large percentage of police are former members of the military so saying they could out shoot 80% or more is probably way off, especially in a real life situation. Cops should train more than they do but I don't think they are as terrible as most people think.

True. Not everyone gets to participate in AS training, but competitions (defensive pistol matches, in particular) are good because there are basic rules built into the match that require shooters to shoot from cover/concealment. Also the adrenaline rush and movement elevates heart rate. Any training focusing on accuracy, speed, and cover definitely helps.

One of my best friends from HS is on the FN Pro Team and does 3-gun tournaments, he came in 2nd on the TV show one year, along with other shooting competitions and has all kinds of world titles in shooting. We have talked about if someone like him ever went on a rampage how much damage they could do and it is scary, it would be so bad.

I just wish the media would stop repeating the names of the
attacker(s)

mention it in the initial coverage then just refer to them as the attacker , stop giving their name attention that in a small way feeds this shite

I AGREE. But CNN THINKS we ALL want to know as much as possible about the ATTACKER more than the victims... They are CLASSIC FAIL here... They do it everytime something like this happens...

Well ya assault rifles are almost never used in USA shootings but assault weapons are used in almost every mass shooting we have here.
