My bad, thought I read revenue not earnings. Carry on.

Same here. If it keeps getting worse, I'll own a big chunk of an oil company for 10k

I should get it back, but after talking to the owner of that company, jobs in my market (Mechanical Engineering) are slim pickings right now since everyone is trimming the fat across the board.
False, recruiters are knocking my door down. In addition to that I know 3 plants not including mine that are in desperate need of Mechanical Engineers.

So when should they decide to cut, when it's too late? Their profit was down nearly 40%, and oil prices have fallen another 33% since July 1st, yet people act like they should keep employees forever.
I know it is tough to lose your job, but I don't fault Shell's management for that decision.

The 1980s bumper sticker I want is from Texas: "Dear God, Give Me One More Oil Boom & I Promise Not To Piss It Away"
quote:
Shell has started to offer severance packages to senior workers
This is the frightening part. There's already too much gap between young employees and old in the oil business because of the climate of the 80s and 90s, this will only exasperate that.

I ain't working at no plant, but what I do was service a part for anything with an engine, and a lot of those people are doing it in-house now to cut costs. Was thinking about switching to the engine/turbo side, but supposedly they are getting their work done overseas more and more because it's cheaper (to cut costs).

Oilfield Honey spending Government Money
Yea, oil sucks right now. If you're smart, you have investments and such. If you're an asshat then you're super fricked. And I know a lot of super fricked people being sent packing right now. Shouldn't of tried to live Arab rich while you weren't even Katy middle class.

Are earnings not profits?
Either way that number is less than I thought shell would make in a quarter.

You should've put all that in your parentheses and not "mechanical engineering".
My sister had just gotten a job offer from shell to work at one shell square. Wonder if this will affect her offer
