I thought about it last night, and I am gonna try and diversify and branch out into the environmental side. I figure government grants are there, so it should have some stability until shite cools off

Some small fab shops and energy companies are likely hiring on the northshore. Seems like they are always looking for some extra work when I pass through. Don't know how permanent or consistent any would be though

Branch out wherever you can get.
Oil is going to come back up at some point. From what I'm hearing it looks like 2018ish will crank back up, but there's still lots of uncertainty. I'm pretty sure I can ride it out until then where I am and if I do I'll be in a good spot, but it's a gamble. Or I can beat feet and get into something else, but it all comes back to oil in SE Louisiana.
I'm leaning toward riding it out.

Laid off in April. I'm gonna wait a little longer. Don't want to go oversees. So happy I'm not in debt and trucks paid off no wife or kids either. If I had a family I would be stressed.

Spent my whole life in Louisiana (small hometown, BR, Hammond, Lafayette) and now live in Houston.
I didn't think I'd love it, but I do.
Live where you work and play.
People that bitch about Houston live in sugar land, humble, pearland etc.
I live 3 miles from downtown in the heart of restaurants, bars and on a huge park where I ride my bikes and take my dog.
It takes me longer to walk to my office from my parking spot than it does driving from home to the spot.
If you do Houston right, it will do you right.

Lots of wishing shitty things on hard working folks in this thread.
The oilfield folks that usually live paycheck to paycheck aren't in the office and it's no different than every other industry where someone making 80k thinks they must drive a BMW. I wouldn't say it's the Oilfield way, but the American way. Most of the oilfield folks I know live way below their means. Just good old country boys that worked their way up, live on several acres outside of town, bust their arse during the week and spend their weekends with family and grandkids.

Not moving out of South LA ever. It has everything I've ever wanted within 30 minutes of me. Just need to find markets that aren't affected by this downturn.....which isn't the easiest thing in the world
