It's good to keep an eye on the end game, but don't look over any type of opportunity because you don't think it aligns with your goals at first glance. Diversifying while you're young will probably help you get where you want to be long term. To follow your example, don't turn down a job in automotive process management because it doesn't appear to align with crane design.

Exactly and being on the older side of most starting a career the longer I stay with this the harder it will be for me to switch. For me at least I'm in the industry I want to be in just not the right segment.

I might bang chicks like I'm 21, but I turned 31 in March. I'm also not the type of guy to jump from job to job looking for an extra $1000/yr, so finding something that benefits me is essential

I agree that I don't fit in culturally in a place like music. But my two passions are good live music and getting outdoors. But I hate country music and booty clubs, and while Conroe area is pretty, I'd rather go hiking than fishing. So while a lot of big cities appeal to me, Houston is just not kinda place. But to each their own.
But, I'm not a fan of the suburbs, another thing that you better love if you move to Houston. The only area I thought was cool was around W Alabama area. The rest was either boring suburbs, or a lot of yuppies.

Mechanical Engineering is not a job market. If youre trying to work in Oil & Gas then probably they are slim pickings. Mechanical Engineering is really broad, so you can end up in many different industries.

You didn't experience much it sounds like.
I havent listened to country music since high school and haven't been to a club since GG's in Alexandria closed. My SO, who lives here also, is from a suburb of NYC and still doesn't even know what country music is.
I love live music, so I moved next to a park where they host Free Press summer fest every year and am 2 hours from SXSW and ACL. And I spend every second I can outdoors, which is why I play golf and ride bikes.
I've been to the suburbs of Houston about four times since I moved here, to play golf and visit my uncle once.
I live about 1.5 miles from w alabama street and go to w alabama ice house a few times a month for beers, tacos and sometimes basketball. It's montrose, and a great damn area that is full of gays, beautiful women, great cocktails and the best restaurants in the city.
Hell even if you love to country you can move to it here. I looked at 4 acres of land last weekend thats nearest neighbor was no closer than 1000 feet away and it was less than an hours from my office downtown.
While many big cities have more to offer than Houston, if you can't find your niche here you either didn't look hard enough or you're just ignorant.

Houston is disliked by many people. Yes it has a lot to offer with regards to city living but there are negatives associated with the city. The weather and the lack of variety in outdoor activities to name two.
Give me Denver or Salt Lake City any day.

It's true. I work overseas and we were generally considered untouchable during downturns. This is the first time I've seen ex-pats get laid off. And not just low level ex-pats. A friend of mine how was a Director of Business Development got the axe this week.

TT05. I got a couple emails this week about a job in Soudi and one in Abu Dhabi. Sent my CV with an outrageous starting salary. The Saudi people want to speak to speak with me about the job. Crazy to think they are trying to poach people still employed with all the available people out there.

As someone who is responsible for managing an international staff of people I can tell you another thing that is heavily influencing who to retain and who to replace right now. Kids.
My company is pushing me to replace rotational positions with live in positions. If I get a CV and the person has a large family they go to the bottom of the stack. Experienced single individuals without children are in high demand now because they're cheaper.
