We had a few friends brew beer for our reception instead of giving us gifts.
My grandfather paid for the rest of the alcohol and wine because the wedding/reception was at his ranch and he wanted to. Worked out because he got to keep anything leftover and we didn't have to haul it home.

This. Grooms parents do cover a few other small items such as certain line items on the floral bill. Don't know why, but was told its customary.

Pay for it with one of your credit cards and make minimum monthly payments. When you get divorced, you can split the debt with your wife in the divorce settlement. What could be more fair?

My dad paid in my case. Her family are not drinkers, some for religious reasons and some just cause they just don't drink socially. My family are from South Louisiana so they drink a frick ton. We ponied up for the kegs and bar.

Brides parents pay for the whole shebang. Not sure why it is this way, since the groom is getting married too. I think it should be split between both parents.

I've married off a daughter and a son. Normally the brides parents pay for the reception (booze and all). But, my ex contributed to the reception for my son and DIL, because her her family didnt budget enough. I would have kicked in if she hadn't, either way just make it work.
