I’d imagine the quickest remedy is to demo the damaged section so cars can safely pass under it and then rebuild the damaged section. I know dick about bridge construction though, but I do know that is probably the worst section of interstate in the state where that could have happened. Diverting interstate traffic onto 2 lane surface roads is a nightmare scenario especially with Labor Day around the corner

There's not a quick fix on this one. it's 4-span continuous prestressed concrete bridge. You can see in the pictures the prestressed stands that have snapped. You're not going to be able to just put those back. The strands run end-to-end across all 4 spans. You won't be able to post tension that.
Definitely need to close the overpass and remove any portion of the bridge you know can't hold itself up anymore and then get redesigned for replacement.

I have no idea what they are going to do with the southbound traffic. You can’t drive underneath that bridge. Only place to divert traffic is onto 31 but that’s a 2 lane road from alabaster to Calera

Drove thru there for many years, traffic was bad pre 2020, can't imagine it now

You're not kidding. Stayed there this past Saturday night. Drove through on Sunday and it looked like a disaster.

A few months back, farther north in the Decatur area we had a flatbed lose a big arse roll of steel on one of the 65 ramps. It messed up a stretch of the road and took out a chunk of the concrete guardrail structure. Thankfully, the roll didn't hit any vehicles. It was a pain for a couple of weeks.

Jeff County had the money to widen Crosshaven here in Cahaba Heights for over 15 yrs before finally getting the project done.
With that said, I thought the redesign of Malfunction Junction was going to be a debacle. Blew me away how quickly they got it done and how well it’s worked out.

I just came through there in the northbound side a couple hours ago on my way back from a meeting in Montgomery. Traffic was an absolute mess on the southbound side. I wondered what was going on. There had to be a dozen or so state troopers at the Shelby Co Airport exit and they were directing traffic into the middle construction zone between the north and southbound lanes. And I noticed they had also the overpass there blocked at both sides. Between there and the Alabaster Hwy 31 exit I noticed there was zero southbound traffic. When I got to the Alabaster Hwy 31 exit, that’s when I noticed they had all four southbound lanes blocked and were detouring all southbound traffic to Hwy 31.

Better call the guys who repaired I-85 in Atlanta after all those insulated cables stored under the viaduct caught fire. That was a bigger mess than this and they got I-85 fixed pretty quickly, though it cost them. A company in Savannah handled it.

Hey at least we got our new wall and entry flowers done though! Maybe next we can get the elevator over by the library bridge installed..

I think the lowboy in this picture is the culprit….
I noticed it when I was passing. There was a regular looking white baw, looked kinda young, that I took to be the driver because I saw him getting something out of the cab as I drove by.
I can’t say it was definitely him because the accident happened well before I got there. But that was the only lowboy I saw sitting there.

Even further north to Nashville is a shitshow. Turned an 8 hour drive into 11 for us recently. Traffic jam caught the wife off guard. She got the urge and couldn't get to the bathroom. Ended up having a panic attack and vomiting all over the rd. Fun trip.
