Sensor damaged by a foreign object on Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX triggered fatal crash

One source told ABC News that they manually attempted to bring the nose of the plane back up by using the trim wheel. Soon after, the pilots restored power to the horizontal stabilizer.
With power restored, the MCAS was re-engaged, the sources said, and the pilots were unable to regain control and the plane crashed.
The preliminary findings in the crash investigation are expected to be released by transportation officials in Ethiopia on Thursday morning.

Not that I’m doubting the story, but I’m always fascinated at how they can determine parts of a plane were damaged prior to violently slamming into the earth.

Something other than what? It was still the MCAS system that led to the crash. Something wrong with one sensor caused the system to essentially fly the plane into the ground.

Step 1 to surviving a plane crash: Avoid flying on any airline whose name makes you ask "Who the frick would fly there?"

Is a planes ability to make a successful flight really that reliant on this one sensor being functional? It seems a plane/pilot should have the ability to overcome this sensor being taken out especially if it can be taken out by a bird or ice or whatnot.

I’m assuming it’s not just based from physical data, but from reconstructing the flight profile from all of the sensors and seeing the AoA readings not match up.

The problem is that the plane isn’t really being flown by the pilot. It’s flown by a computer that even in manual mode just take general direction from the pilot.
So what the control surfaces actually do is dictated by both pilot input and what the system views the current situation as.
Depending on the programming, that mix with a faulty sensor could lead to counterintuitive responses.

Not to derail the thread, but this is exactly why I don’t see 100% autonomous cars ever being a thing. An alert driver/pilot must be there to take over control should the technology fail.
If a 100 million dollar plane can’t work autonomously, then it will never be economically possible in a car that is affordable to the masses.

But on the other side, the technology in the manner I described has been in place for nearly 40 years. Its not like what you are seeing now is the product of getting the bugs out of a new product.
And performing a similar function in a car is massively different from a plane. The car doesn’t have to track the craft in 3 dimentional space, monitor environmental conditions, monitor car’s response to environmental conditions, analyze difference between expected and actual values to extrapolate condition of the craft, use this value in future calculations....etc etc, and if it doesn’t do all this correctly the car crashes.
Additionally logically think about what you said. How many people die every day from careless/distracted driving daily? Hundreds? Including fender benders, do you think the number of incident rate reaches a thousand daily?
And you are pointing to an example that has occurred fewer than a dozen times in 30 years with tens of thousands of flights as the reason autonomous driving won’t ever get essentially universally adopted? Are you equating the driving ability of a flight captain with a methhead?
