I don't understand millenials using one of these. We are good about not hoarding a bunch of BS. We saw both our parents do it and refuse to do the same.

We have a home renovation coming up. I’ll probably get one to store furniture and new appliances for several months.

People buy way more than they need. It's a sickness

But I guarantee most are filled with junk people forget about or can't let go of.
I spent a couple days going through a storage unit for a deceased relative in Gulf Shores. I was the only one at the place moving stored furniture & junk.
Most people coming and going were small business owners. Condo cleaning ladies stored all their linens/towels and cleaning supplies. Small strip mall coffee shop/food service stored bulk supplies. Boat owners that kept their boat at a marina stored fishing gear.

Some people are paying $300/month...

Look at most of the new construction and the lack of storage space. Almost seems planned.

Why are people keeping stuff that will end up tossed or donated one day anyway?
We rented one when we had our second child. Third bedroom had been the guest/storage room and we no longer had the space for things like Christmas decorations. I would generally have preferred to put those items in the attic, but we have 10 foot ceilings and our attic only has an access panel, not the collapsible stairs.
It's somewhat annoying to have to pay to rent additional space, but maintaining our garage space for our cars is a higher priority.

less is more
As a somewhat minimalist, I totally agree that less is more. I despise clutter - especially in a garage. The only thing in my garage is my vehicle and a single garbage can.

I would love to own about 10 of those places. Just think how much they will make when the government comes to rent all of them for illegal housing. 1000.00-1500.00 per unit.

If used right, they can actually save you money in some circumstances.
Some people can live to age 90 smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.
Some people survived the sinking of the HMS Hood by the KMS Bismark.
If you are using them for a business, that's different. For a household, have less shite.

It's a direct reflection of our current state in time. We have become so rich compared to prior generations in America and back in time worldwide. Used to be humans only purchased/acquired necessities. Now, we seem to have to have everything an then we get our use out of it, we dispose of it in either a landfill or storage unit.
I'm totally guilty of this...

My wife has a storage unit in Dallas that we've paid for probably 15 years. We've been in a cold war about it for a decade. It's like 250 bucks a month now.
15x12x250 = $45,000. Ouch
That is nothing.
My Dad is 82. I took over his real estate about 5 years ago. He has two small commercial buildings and one 1800 sq ft house just full of his crap that he just flat out refuses to get rid of. Old cars, furniture, appliances etc etc. He is a hoarder.
The cost of "storing" his stuff is about $16-18K a year which I have to absorb with profit from his other real estate.
It is insane. He won't budge.

Pay a gym membership of $40/mo that has showers.

I could believe it, there's one not far from me that only does big stalls that are sized for boats/rvs/etc. It's like $400/month and he's probably got 50 units on the property. He recently expanded and added just covered RV storage, not your own separate lockable space, just a covered place for your boat/RV and someone told me those were $200/month. Or now he's letting people have a space just out in the fenced in lot for like $100/month, uncovered. The place is practically filled. I'd imagine these are people living in subdivisions with HOAs and no space to store their toys.
That place has to be pulling $20,000 or more a month.
