As a libertarian, I have been torn about all the pollution and littering. Living in Louisiana, it is so bad. What other people and companies are doing is impacting my life.

I believe people shouldn't do anything that harms others but people and companies seem hell bent on polluting everything for their gain (or laziness).

I used to think, it is just a straw, but then I look and it is just a beer can and just a fast food bag and just an old refrigerator and just an old car and next thing you know it is just a shithole.

Don’t ban a product, shoot an offender.

What percentage of waste in the ocean do straws make up?

Why is that relevant? Do plastic straw contribute to pollution? Yes. Is there an easy fix in the biodegradable straws? Yes.

The size of the problem is irrelevant. It is still a problem with an easy fix.

Would I rather that all businesses switched on their own instead of a gov’t mandate? Yes

I did but when the story starts off with the "fact" that 500,000,000 straws are thrown away everyday in the US, I'm going to be dubious of the rest of their "facts."

How is it impacting your life?

People litter. So ban everything that can be tossed out of a car window? It will get onerous, straws are the start.

Because the government is using force to solve something that's not really a relevant problem.

Why is it so difficult for folks in the south to understand why this is a problem? Why is it cool in conservative circles to trash the environment? I am from Louisiana and have been a recreational diver for 20 years and know first-hand that this really is a problem. It may seem insignificant to you with the amount you personally use, but the accumulated population total usage is astronomical. The problem is the biodegrading lifespan, our landfills and oceans are a finite resource and they require our attention. Plastic bags are the worst! How much of an inconvenience is it really to buy a handful of reusable grocery bags, metal straws and thermal coffee cups? Just think about the crab, shrimp, lobster, oysters and fish we Louisiana folk like me love to eat. Don't you want to know you are doing your part to help make sure it stays available and of high quality? I know I do.

Stopped right here. Find me one person that thinks it’s “cool” to litter. The problem is not the product it is the trashy arse people.

Air polluted, Water polluted, trash every where.

Have you read about the trash patches in the oceans? Have you read about the dead zone in the gulf of mexico? Cancer Alley in Louisiana? and on and on.

It's astounding to me the people here in Louisiana who think it's ok to just toss their trash out on the side of the road. Anywhere from a fast food bag all the way up to an appliance. You really don't see that in other states, at least not to the extent you see it here. And if it does happen, the other states manage to have crews that pick it up.

I was riding on I-10 about a month ago, and this bitch tosses a McDonald's bag out the window, right in front of me. Like it was no big deal. Now tell me why that bitch couldn't simply wait till she stopped at a gas station or store or got home to toss the bag in the trash can. Was there something in the bag that she had to expel it from the car immediately? It's that mindset that pisses me off. Throw it out, somebody else will get it. The problem is, somebody else may or may not months down the road, so our roadways look ghetto as frick compared to other states.

Conservatives used to also be big conservationists back in the day. It is funny how that switched.

The thread started about straws. Certain types of air and water pollution laws are understandable. Government straw control, no.

Who contributed to the pacific trash patch?

The gulf dead zone is part of a trade off for abundant food. How does it impact your life?

Why not start with not littering? Or take personal initiative on things like starting a recycling program.. There a many things that can be done to eliminate plastic wastes instead of creating new ridiculous laws that could put people in a difficult situation that's unwarranted.

Look at how freaked out people get about a straw! "Dark Days ahead of us".....really, because you can't use a friggin straw!

It's a partisan issue. I don't think conservatives (I'm actually pretty conservative) want to litter or anything. It's just not wanting to side with the libs on an issue. There's no real other reason. And like someone said, don't even pretend it's government overreach. Conservatives have plenty of laws that are overreaching too.

The health of the gulf of mexico impacts everyone in Louisiana. We are the Sportsman's Paradise plus there is a large commercial fishing industry. Due to the rest of the country and world getting abundant food mean Louisianians get some compensation for the damage it does to our economy and environment? Nope. That is how it should work though.
