They make biodegradable straws that are pretty indistinguishable from plastic. Not sure why every one is acting like paper straws are the only alternative. LINK

Not likely from straws, but plastic causes cancer and other bad health conditions such as messing with hormones any ways. More of an issue if it’s heated up I think. I’m not hip enough on the matter though. I try to avoid it as much as possible but I will drink cold drinks with a plastic straw.
