How are they ending up in the ocean? What percentage of straws actually end up in the ocean? How are they screwing things up?

It's more of a heroin town.

God forbid you ban plastic syringes.

From Southeast Asia, where most junk in the ocean comes from.

That's what I figured. Places like that and somehow inconveniencing us is going to fix it.

It sucks that we have to qualify any amount of environmental awareness like this

No shite! Check the other replies. Yes plastic straws are not the source of all pollution, but why not take them out of the equation?

There are far greater methods of saving the environment than banning plastic straws.

I can see this with some things, but straws isn't one of them. Maybe there are other things that would have a greater effect. But are any of them as easy as not using a straw? They are very useful when you are getting your food from a to go window. But in almost every other situation, it's just not necessary and adds up quickly.

As someone who likes the outdoors and fishing it was a real shock to me when a few buddy's really started bowfishing a lot. Riding around the murky waters that I fished all the time, but suddenly seeing everything lit up.....you really see all the crap that people just toss out without thinking. Cans, wrappers, trash, buckets, cups, etc.. I'm not a tree hugger, but really don't like screwing with the environment when not necessary. I can admit I've never seen straws. But that's likely because they are small and clear most of the time. If all that other stuff is getting out there, then they are too. I really don't care if they don't have an actual affect. They don't belong there. Why are we willing to trash that environment because we don't want to put our lips on a cup?

Hope they are offering lower water bills and subsidies to places that now need to purchase dishwashers to comply with new regulation.

Are you suggesting places didn't have to wash plates and cups before since they were using straws?

So let's ban cans, wrappers, buckets, cups and everything else that can be used to litter.

Pass more laws because something ends up where it shouldn't? We did, there are laws for illegal dumping and littering. Who is the "we" who are OK with trashing the environment because they use straws? Is there something unique about straw users that causes them to want to trash the environment more than others? What about me and the fact that I've never tossed a straw or anything besides an eggshell in the Marsh while fishing? I'm a responsible straw owner.

Straws don't litter, people do.

It’s not about straws. It about constant and never ending government overreach

I’m all for being eco friendly when possible, but this is major government over reach.

I never once said anything about passing a law. Merely stated that trash gets where it's not supposed to, so I have no problem believing straws do as well. I'm not standing at the front of the line to get this made illegal, but at the same me think it's so small and insignificant. That's why it doesn't bother me.

Mileage restrictions, emission restrictions, etc. are something I'm typically not happy about because it has a significant affect on my daily life. Straws is just a non starter. I rarely use them. Unless it's handed to me with a straw in it, I never use one.

I truly believe that some people just don't want liberal ideals to win and fight it purely based on that. I'll admit I'm not a fan of making laws for stuff like this. There are certain situations where straws are needed and a paper straw sucks. But the fact that half our country eats fast food for damned near every meal and probably goes through 3 straws a day because they can't be bothered to put their lips on a cup is a bit stupid. If we'd have been reasonable with them in the first place it wouldn't have ever been brought up.
