Of the 37,133 people killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2017, 47% were not wearing seat belts. In 2017 alone, seat belts saved an estimated 14,955 lives and could have saved an additional 2,549 people if they had been wearing seat belts.

Seat belt stats

Facts show wearing your seat belt saves people. Why would the people want to be burden with the debt to provide medical treatment for those who get hurt or die from not wearing one?

It’s one thing if your son was unbuckled and sitting. But to stick your head out the window, is just dumb.

God's Will disagrees with those stats.

Why is it any of your business?
We (the citizens of the US) have collectively decided to have compulsory seat belt laws on the books.

These are not suggestions or recommendations but laws.

Should we enforce our laws? I’d recommend so.

If you want to live in a society where folks can pick and choose which rules they obey or disobey and where laws are not enforced, go to Somalia for a while and report back how that metric works for a society.

tl/dr: Morans don’t realize that to have a civil society, laws & rules must be obeyed & enforced

Yes, and I still think the seatbelt law is idiotic. If you’re under 18 then fine but once you’re an adult then make your own choices.

I heard a cop talk about people thinking that 30 mph isn't a big deal. That they can brace themselves in a crash and avoid injury. His point was, if you really believe that, go in your backyard and run as fast as you can at the back wall of your house. Just as you are about to hit, throw your arms out and try to brace yourself. Most people can't run in excess of 20 mph and would still be seriously injured.

So now let's say a deer had jumped out in front of your car and you slam on your brakes. Your son breaks a rib on the edge of the sun roof. Would you be ok with paying out of your pocket instead of using insurance? Because that's what makes everyone's rates go up. I hear what you are saying about freedoms, but unfortunately we live in a time when the actions of some affect us all.

Tell your son I said, Thank you for your service, and buckle up.

Some "Morans" don't realize that this entire thread was started on the basis that this should not be a law.

Sorry. Been there, done that. Does not compute.

You do have a choice. You can choose to wear a seatbelt or take a ticket. It's people like you, that choose to be hard headed and ignore the statistics that show seatbelts are the best option that make laws like this necessary. Kind of ironic.

Well it is.

That’s not subjective.

If a group of morans don’t like a law, they should ban together and call themselves “Florida”.

What bothers me the most about this is his demanding the kids id.

They all do this for passengers and such and it's no different than the communists demanding your papers.

They should have let you off with a warning since your son is active duty military

I and my passengers wear our seatbelts 99.5% of the time. This was a reasonably safe exception for a specific situation. I’m willing to take a few small risks in life to better enjoy the wonders of the world we live in. Apparently you’d prefer big brother Government to have the power to harass us in those moments.

And yet he was not the one ticketed.

Besides the fact I was obviously referring to LEO's proclivity to demand passengers ID's when they in fact have no reason nor right to.

The police state keeps creeping in.

No one is arguing otherwise.

My contention on what should be overseen by the government and what should not, is based on how it affects the rights of others outside of the individual indulging in the action.

If some idiot doesn't want to wear a seat belt, I don't see why the government should force them to do so.

You weren’t being harassed. No matter how many times you try to convince yourself that you were.
