So I took my family to spend a few days in the Smoky Mountains this weekend. We get into the national park and proceed to drive the slow, meandering parkway along the beautiful mountain stream. Naturally we open the windows and sunroof to soak in the air and scenery. My 19 y/o son (who is home visiting from active military duty) decides to prop his head out through the sunroof for an enhanced experience.

Suddenly we are being tailed by a Park Ranger and ordered to pull over. Young Officer DoGood approaches and asks if we have any weapons in the vehicle (no, we don’t). He then begins to lecture us about the importance of seat belt laws and the hazards of vehicle rollovers with your head through the sunroof. And how people are killed each year because of this. He takes my and my son’s IDs to check for warrants. He returns and “mercifully” only issues my son an Official Warning for his irresponsible and dangerous actions. However he issues me a $180 Federal Citation for not having everyone in my vehicle buckled properly. He lectures us a bit more about safety and seat belts. And he tells my son that he should help me pay the fine since it was his head out the sunroof. I listen and play nice because I don’t want to give Officer DoGood any reason to harass any further on our otherwise pleasant vacation.

Now I’m an avid seat belt wearer, always have been. And I require my passengers to be buckled also in most every situation. But this is absolutely fricking ridiculous. Why have we given the government the power to harass and fine us for behaviors that harm no one else in any way??

You ever had to recover bodies after car crashes?

Do that a couple of times and get back to us whether the rules don’t apply to you.

why should your headless corpse be forced to traumatize others because you couldn't take 2 seconds to click a seatbelt?

same for helmets on motorcyclists

Seems like your ticket was warranted.

Also, $180 isn’t a lot of money for OT ballers. Suck it up, Karen.

No state income tax= getting that money any way they can, some one has to pay for roads, police, firemen, parks, rangers, etc.

You are NEVER going to touch a live female boob with this attitude.

Unless you pay her to do it.

I'm fine with seatbelt laws, since we the taxpayer frequently foot the bill for medical treatment of accidents.

Hell, maybe we should fine people for living while morbidly obese.

Keep in mind that we were driving 30 mph. This wasn’t some highway.
Do you realize how many thousands of people were riding their motorcycles through the same park that day? Why don’t they have to be buckled in? Their activity is far more likely to result in dead bodies. Maybe we should outlaw motorcycles?

National Park fines go to the Federal Gov't. You mail that $180 check to Philly,

I quite agree with you, OP. Victimless crimes to the tune of 180 for what your son did is ridiculous.

Same reason drug laws exist.

The government knows what's best for you.

I agree with OP. Seat belt laws are intrusive and unnecessary.

Damn...If you pussies are ok with the government micromanaging our lives like this then don’t be surprised when our freedoms are eroded away over time.

I'm not a fan of seatbelt tickets. But the way you initially portrayed it was that you were on the motor trail, which is a single-lane road with a 10 mph speed limit. Not a 30mph+ highway.
