My engine went to crap early last year along with my water pump on 2000 jeep. I decided to spend 6k on the jeep for brand new engine, hoses, belts, radiator, fixed up A/C, brakes. Alot better than buying new and no note. It has been about 15 months and havent spent a dollar on it since.

4 cylinder diesel pickup?
Like the Chevrolet Colorado Duramax? It's about $30K and up. Designed to be a Toyota Hilux competitor outside the US.

It's crazy how much a nice truck is these days.
Right before last kid was born, wife was shopping for a larger SUV. I told her to find what she liked and I would have one like it found at auction (brother is in business) that would be used w liw milage.
She dragged the shot out till 2 days before we were to induce and she called me from Toyota and said "frick it, I'm buying new, and dont say shite"
Fast forward 5 to last qeek... I figured we were on our last payment soon, but find out she financed it for 72 months!

Her decision probably cost us 20k extra by not just getting a 1 yr old used.
NEVER AGAIN

I recently paid 1200 for a 2002 camry. No full coverage insurance, no interest, no depreciation..., no worries. I aint trying to keep up with the Jones's.
There is a big difference between buying a piece of shite and trying to keep up with the Jones's.
I somewhat agree in that I will never pay a lot for a vehicle. You can find new and used that are just find for alot less than $40K.
I had purchased a smaller truck five years ago for $22K. Ended up having to trade it in due to a long arse commute I have and MPG being pretty bad. Drove my wife's older piece of crap SUV for a few years and just got a new accord for $25K with a lot of technology and safety features that I love.
For me, the buy used crap is over hyped for the most part. I searched for a good used truck five years ago and they were holding their value too well to justify it. Financing is too cheap to not buy new for me at this stage in my life.

Everyone waste money on something and if you don't you probably lead a pretty boring life
I wasted plenty buying only new vehicles during my life. When I got transferred to Houston this year I paid cash for a 2015 Corolla with 35k miles on it. Got it for a good price because they couldn't move it and the reason they couldn't was because it has a 6 speed stick and almost nobody in the market for a Corolla can drive a manual. I'm getting 33 mpg in town, 35 on the highway. No monthly note and when someone eventually bumps into it or runs me over I won't lose a second of sleep over it.
ETA and my insurance is dirt cheap.

Buying new vehicles is a waste of money.
I buy new company vehicles every 2 years and get a great tax right off.
But I agree, buying new is a waste of money unless you have to.

But everyone wants luxury trim and complains of cost.
this
you can get a truck for a reasonable price but if you want all the bells and whistles you're gonna pay.
also base vehicles now have FAR more safety features than the base model a person may have bought in 1990 and inflation raises the price of everything over time.
complaining its b/c of MPG regulations like some here are doing is bogus.

Thinking about just paying cash for a used 4Runner and rolling with it until the wheels fall off. Screw a $650 payment for 7 years. End semi-rant. Yea I’m trashy.
If you get a Gen 4 4wd 4Runner...beware of the 4wd actuator leakage issue. It's a bitch..and a $1200 part. They all leak..it's just a matter of WHEN.
Gen 4= 2003-2009

That's impossible, everyone here says 4 runners are perfect and nothing ever breaks on them...

Here is some hard truth that a lot of people won’t like to hear. If you bought a vehicle for over $40k (max 60 month loan term), and you aren’t able to put away $18.5k/year into your 401k and $5.5k/year into a Roth, you can’t afford that vehicle.
Personally, I would put that number at $30k. But without a doubt, at $40k+ you are blowing money on luxuries at the detriment of your future. You probably justify it to yourself for different reasons: priorities, work/life balance, etc. The reality is you can’t afford it.

i follow the 20 4 10 rule
Put down at least 20%
Finance the vehicle for no more than four years
Keep total monthly vehicle expense - including principal, interest, and insurance - under 10% of gross income
