They read the headline and react on emotion. Most don't understand the PPP and EIDL Grant or their purpose.

This is an actual 1 or 0 situation.
As someone that has worked for a non-profit and been on the boards/financial guidance of other non-profits and my church, I'm always surprised at how ignorant people are that think non-profit means exempt from all taxes.
It's literally an income tax exemption on the "profits" but they also have to show how they are utilizing that income for the benefit of the organization/mission. Otherwise they lose their status.
No one cares when a for-profit entity take a measure to lower income to avoid paying some, or all income taxes. e.g. Amazon famously didn't pay income tax until 2019.

The thing most believers won't accept is that religion doesn't need to be as big as it currently is in our society.
Even small churches could spread the word of God and assemble in public. They don't need big audio systems, fancy dress, or other luxuries.
I have a church in my town that is small, but still a fancy building and they stream their service from another church. Why couldn't they save all that and not have another physical building and receive service at home?
Its greed, the same who preach against that.

Churches don't file 990s or even have to apply for an exemption.
they are completely "off the grid" when it comes to income taxes. Yes, absolutely they pay payroll taxes and have an EIN.

I don't know. But if they don't have anyone on payroll, any paying payroll taxes, they aren't getting the PPP $$$.
EIDL would come with a 2.75% interest rate.

You might be right. This might fall under exemption 4. :(
Eta: Actually, after 2 minutes of research, I could make the argument that this exemption wouldn't apply to churches with regard to the "confidential" element of the exception.
