The SBA announced that churches are eligible for stimulus money.

I'm a bit torn on this one; churches taking public money is probably a bad precedent to set and opens the possibility that there will be conflict among faiths that receive public money. The outcry will be fierce when some of this goes to the local Mosque and associated school.

They should not be eligible.

They don't pay taxes to begin with. They should have ample savings.

Then they shouldn't be restricted from assembling either.

They can assemble online as much as they want.

IMO, take the free money and donate it. I don't imagine the SBA will push too hard on churches to pay this back.

They shouldn’t be restricted on assembling, but that really has nothing to do with this.

If they are a business and are eligible for SBA loans, then they should have to pay taxes.

If they want to avoid paying taxes, they can avoid the other benefits afforded to actual businesses.

My main question is: will this be the first time this has ever happened?

The church's have taken a huge hit. They have staff just like a normal business. The only difference is the proceeds. They usually go to charities locally or missions. Tithes go to church improvements. That's why they are tax exempt. The staff still pays taxes. They should be treated like any small business. If any small businesses would like to donate their profits, they can be tax exempt as well.

The B in SBA stands for BUSINESS, correct?

Just want to make sure we're clear on that

Churches that have schools attached to them should be paid.

They don't have the State or city government propping them up and a lot of them are providing free lunches to kids.

This. If school is not in session, then tuition has to be refunded and that impacts the ability to pay the teachers.

There are many “churches” that are really nothing more than businesses.

They own multiple rental properties, sell cars, run daycares, offer tax preparation services and so forth.

They are private though, nobody told these churches to set up schools, pre-k or day care. They chose to do that to make money and spread their beliefs.

Churches have secretaries, custodians, etc., who do work indistinguishable from the same job description in a secular organization, and face the same layoff threat The PPP loan scheme is designed to forestall this. If other nonprofits are eligible, I don't see a good reason to exclude churches. Pastoral staff is a little different, but I'm not too worked up about it. There will probably be abuses by megachurches, but there's going to be a lot of abuses by for-profit businesses, too. From a macroeconomic standpoint, it doesn't matter, as long as it injects money into the economy.

TL;DR, you need Jesus, baw.

Now, Scruffy agrees with this.

If other nonprofits are afforded this lifeline, then all nonprofits should be afforded the option.

Why in the frick would they eligible? Are they saying they are business? If so, they need to start paying taxes ASAP.

Rockford brought up a good point though.

If any nonprofits are allowed to go this route, why shouldn’t churches be allowed?

It is the same thing.
