No joke.
Even if the guy moves 60 miles away and has a vehicle that gets 10 MPG, with gas @ $3.50/g he's looking at an extra $10,920/yr, or $910/month. He can move, find an apartment for $900-1200/month, and that is that. He can also get significantly better mileage in other vehicles or use BART.

Same here except I never left. I love it here and the biggest downside for me is distance from family. I'm never leaving.

On the other hand, it sounds like he has had 6 insanely lucky years of living in a highly desirable area for next to nothing.
Next to nothing =
$1,800 x 12 months = $21,600
$21,600 x 6 years = $129,600

He should just squat there. It'll be years before they can get him out.
I like how you have no idea how squatting works yet make this assumption. He wouldn't be squatting since he is a tenant. Squatters are actually subject to arrest in many areas since they are trespassing and law enforcement does not have to follow the eviction process when it's criminal trespassing.
Since he is a tenant on a sublease this is a civil issue (not criminal like squatting is considered in many areas) and he will fall under eviction laws and they can have him out in under 60 days (probably closer to 30) via eviction as long as everything is filed and processed correctly and he is served proper notice.

He was paying $1800 for a 3 bedroom??? yeah he was sucking at that teat for a while.
BUT here's what will happen...
the rent board will uphold his appeal (even if he's already evicted at that point)
landlord will have to pay said man upwards of $50,000 as a move out cost.
I would never ever be a landlord in this city.

Where is Vito Corleone when you need him?

Yeah. This is the fifth quarter - she's jacking it to $8,000. He can't pay it, so he'll move out. Then she'll rent it to someone for $6k to $7k.
frick him.

This is why i hate hearing hipsters argue for higher wages and live in place like SF. I don't want to hear anyone with a degree bitching about wages and you chose to live in one of the most expensive cities on earth. Move.

As a purchase (condo) the property is easily in the $1.5 to $2.5m range. You would also pay a hundred and a quarter to live in a $2m house for 6 years.

I swear most of the people on this board don't know what a hipster is. "Lives in San Francisco? Yep, hipster!"

Sounds like he needs to find a place to live for > $1800.

Stupid to rent anywhere for 1800 also.

It costs money to live in a place where people actually want to live. Shocking, I know.

Luckily I've never had the misfortune of going to California, but I can definitely support the truth of this statement. That place is a shite hole.
Lol. You can't be serious! Thats some pretty shallow shite to say.

Nola needs to be the new tech hub so I can start charging $8k a month for one of my Properties.
Posted on 6/28/16 at 1:22 pm to AbitaFan08
Dave Foley really needs work if he can't afford 8k a month. Where's that kids in the hall money?

The guy had a 3 bdrm on Telegraph Hill with Bay views, not a single wide trailer in rural Livingston Parish.

How is that shallow? I'm down to earth and don't care for pretension. And you can feel the pretentiousness flowing out of the screen on Google Street view there. So for practical purposes I have been there, and it's horrible. No thanks.
