SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) – Stories of outrageous rent hikes abound in San Francisco, a city that’s been saturated with techies with tech money, but this is one of the worse ones we’ve seen.
Neil Hutchinson has been renting his apartment in North Beach for six years and but he’s about to lose it.
He has been paying $1800 a month for rent, but his landlady recently informed him she has raised the rent to $8000 a month.
That’s a 344% increase. Even in a city like San Francisco where rents can go sky high, this rent hike takes the cake.
Hutchinson says he is in a state of “complete shock and devastation.”
“I don’t know where I’m going to go,” he says. “I had no idea it would be that much. I had some inkling they could raise the rent, but I had no idea they could raise it that much.
The apartment has three bedrooms and views of the bay. Coit Tower is just steps away.
Apartments of similar size in the area rent for an average of $6800 a month. Still, Hutchinson’s building is more than 100-years-old and a bit run down.
“Their claim is that I’m not covered under rent control and I don’t agree,” says Hutchinson.
The landlord also says he’s not the primary renter because he was not on the original lease. He did turn in an application, though.
“I was given no notice that I was a subtenant,” he says. “I’ve deposited money directly into their account, they cashed my checks, so I don’t know what this is about.”
Neil works as a union video engineer and says he can’t afford $8000. He could be evicted in a matter of weeks before the rent board can even hear his case.

This is why you always sign a lease and check the wording to make sure they can't increase the rent during the current lease

My recommendation for this individual is to move. Grab him one of those sweet $6800 pads.
Oh wait. He can't afford those without rent control either, I'll wager.

You're an idiot if you pay $8k in rent

Similar thing happened to my cousin in Oakland. Not on the scale of this but enough for her to move back to the south.

Sounds like Neil scammed the rent control laws for years. frick him. I hope his sorry arse has to move to Hayward.

Are you basing that on your income or that of SF tech millionaires? At what price does paying rent stop making sense?

Where did you live?
My 3 years in southern california were the best, and made me realize just how backward the south really is.

He should just squat there. It'll be years before they can get him out.

On one hand, that's an insane price hike.
On the other hand, it sounds like he has had 6 insanely lucky years of living in a highly desirable area for next to nothing.
I would just be grateful for those six years and move on.

He can stay 1 year rent free if he wants.

Luckily I've never had the misfortune of going to California, but I can definitely support the truth of this statement. That place is a shite hole.
