for awhile we had stuff some through, cat1 cat2, every other season or so at least.
then after ivan there was nothing until now.

Don't

Agreed. Dump long-range cones, visually pleasing to the ignorant masses, in favor of a coded system of alerts/awareness. That way, there are fewer "but we didn't know" excuses.
I mean they have the watch/warnings, but people don’t pay attention. The NHC is also bad about not dropping them when things have changed. Morgan City was in the hurricane warning still yesterday IIRC.
Cones that can change sizes based on confidence would be a good start.

Destin area is fine outside of power outages currently. Still windy so they are having a hard time repairing I’m sure.
I wouldn’t recommend they arrive early in the AM but it’s supposed to be nice weather the next week or so so it should be a nice time to come.
Lot of landscaping debris but that should be cleaned up by the weekend.

28 inches inside. They were able to prep pretty well, freezer fell over and she was trying to get all the food bagged and out, she remembers "Ivan Fridges". Boat is a little dinged but made.
They have a condo in Gulf Shores near Sea n Suds, said all seems well there.
Headed over to Seaside in OB, said its got some damage, wasn't sure of the extent.

Thanks, though I’m a little disappointed the military didn’t get to bomb it for our viewing pleasure.
Same man.

I blame Accuweather and their 60 day (or whatever they're up to now) weather forecasts.
The average person expects longterm accuracy that just isn't there and isn't possible. The "Cone" debate highlights that. I don't know how the average consumer can grasp the concept when they likely put faith in any long range forecast over 7-10 days out on normal weather, much less tropical cyclones.

Alabama has been impacted by plenty of tropical systems since Ivan in 2004, but there have been no direct hurricane landfalls on the AL Gulf Coast since Ivan. Seems like when we do get a hurricane landfall, it is a big time impact.

Mayor LaToya has said repeatedly that no city is better prepared for a Cat 5 than New Orleans.
While this is clearly delusion on her part, it does make me wonder what city would be best prepared? Miami?

Wasn't Katrina a Cat 1 when it first made landfall before circling back out into the gulf and re-forming?
That may have hit Florida around Pensacola though.
I was down there a few years ago for a tropical storm, and it's pretty gnarly when the house starts shaking in just those winds. Can't even imagine how scary it'd be in 120 mph winds.
