Do you think the storm has a chance to go super sonic warp speed and hit today?

There is zero uncertainty(as much guarantee as any day gives you) that today will be fine to have school

These threads would be a lot more interesting if we could create a parimutuel site to bet on landfall coordinates and landfall windspeed. It could be set up where you can add more to the pot if you want to "rebuy" and change your guess with amounts escalating steeply as the storm approaches. Be interesting to see how man dilettantes like myself would put money in.

Isn’t shear supposed to increase as it approaches land? If it doesn’t strengthen much by this afternoon could that limit its potential?

Y’all MFers that bitch and complain about openings or closures are so fricking annoying

Why is it hard to understand that there is a TON of liability involved in these decisions so they will always remain on the cautious side.

It’s a whole lot easier to make these types of decisions online when you only have yourself to worry about, but imagine having to make these calls for a whole school system or parish

Some of y’all are beyond obnoxious with this shite

Yeah lets not compare this to the most intense tropical cyclone in the recorded history of the planet (by max winds)

Teachers aren’t babysitters. Schools should open or close. If it is close enough a call for it to be optional, teachers should be able to be prepping as well.

Besides teachers, what other workers got off in the Nola area all day to "prep"?

Not any medical personnel, accountants, engineers, or any other degreed professionals.

What makes them so special?

My office is full of people with post graduate professional certifications and everyone is allowed to work at home and/or prep in any way they see fit.

This is such an excuse that people use and have no idea what they are talking about

There is no liability reasoning to cancel school an entire day before a storm hits.

There is also no liability reason you cancel school for multiple days after a storm is supposed to hit before the storm even makes landfall

, I just dont understand the “optional” school day thing. Open or close.

It just means it won’t count against those kids who don’t come today. It gives families who were planning to leave or left the option.

It was a hyperbolic comparison but in the case of Sally, going from its current speed to Cat 2 would not be a huge feat in 40 hours.

Is this a hurricane thread or a “school closing logic” pissing contest?

True, but to be fair, if New Orleans was still in the direct path, a few places may have chosen to shut down early today. The problem with schools is the logistics. If they wait until the last minute, people lose their mind about having to find sitters and whatnot without any notice. If they call it early, a day like today can happen where it seems like a huge waste.
