Gulf Shores actually formed their own school system recently. No longer a part of Baldwin.

Okay I did not know that. Interesting. Well they get to watch the waves today because it’s starting to churn a little bit on the beach.

These threads are a microcsm off all the chicken little bullshite that plagues us now though

I get yall like this, and yall post good information

But its followed like hawks for days and days and people build it up and build it up etc etc and check every 20 minutes to see whats happening and people work themselves up and then we cancel schools for multiple days before the storm is even 40 hours out

Follow the path, and have a plan. Access the situation a reasonable time before landfall for closures and evacuations

But instead we have people making decisions so far in advance because we are just inundated fr with information overload

Have you seen in the newspaper when they say “east“ in parentheses they will have (right). Can’t believe you have to actually explain to an adult that east is “right“.

, I just dont understand the “optional” school day thing. Open or close.

It just means it won’t count against those kids who don’t come today. It gives families who were planning to leave or left the option.

I think they should be open today. I just dont think of schools as day care. If it’s close enough of a call to give kids/parents the option to prep/leave (which again, I dont think this is) then why say F U to teachers, bus drivers, cleaners, cooks, etc at the school. Open or close.

create a parimutuel site to bet on landfall coordinates and landfall windspeed. It could be set up where you can add more to the pot if you want to "rebuy" and change your guess with amounts escalating steeply as the storm approaches. Be interesting to see how many Degenerate Gamblers like myself would put money in.

There is no liability reasoning to cancel school an entire day before a storm hits.

It's two things.

1) The School Bus- you don't want busses operating in high winds or heavy rain, if you can help it.

2) Most school districts have very few subs available these days, so if a bunch of people call in sick to prepare, they will have trouble staffing.

Our district cancelled today only at this point. I know a few that cancelled today and tomorrow. I think cancelling Wed at thisp point is a bit extreme, but haven't see anyone going beyond Wed.

Another issue at least in our district is a lot of teachers live out of district, which causes even more to call in on days like this.

No real western component. Unless that changes (or the track), SELA will be spared mostly

The word for today is "liability."

You'd be surprised at what corporate or governmental attorneys and risk managers can mandate.

I suspect you'd be very surprised.

There is another thread about school closing, go bitch and moan there...

I will say it again the same people bitching about schools closing are the same ones that would be bitching if school was open and something were to happen....

This storm had so much possible error in it this just reminds us even today how unpredictable they can be. A 50 mile shift makes a colossal difference on impacts.

The Mobile weather guy I watched said the same thing. Pretty much said anywhere from the outskirts of New Orleans to the Mississippi Alabama line this storm will make landfall. Said he wasn’t sure if it was going to be a tropical storm or a hurricane. He’s like the weatherman on Family Guy stating it’s going to rain.

Yawn...

Looks pretty on schedule this morning. A little sloppier than I thought but convection is still healthy and radar suggests my fabled curved band is starting to build. It'll start wrapping around this afternoon, pressure will stay pretty steady/slowly drop and then we should see strengthening tonight and tomorrow into landfall.

No reason seen for significant path changes either.

Plus I get to read all of the school closure raging.

So I'm trying to decide if I should go to the NS this afternoon (in-laws have a generator). I really don't want to leave but I have a newborn and can't frick with not having power for an extended period of time. You think I should still head out? I'm in OM.
