That's not an absolutely terrible location. It's just really close to the hood.

By USDA definition, most of NBR is a food desert.

Woke points awarded by the government does not matter to me.

Some of the oldest family owned grocery stores in Baton Rouge are in north Baton Rouge. Hi Nabor has existed on Winbourne without government help or special tax breaks for a long time. Plus Tony’s Seafood, which is legitimately awesome. Then there is at least one Supercenter.

There could be more variety - especially around Scotlandville - but it’s not a food desert IMO. A lot of local politicians throw those terms around because they want a Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s caliber chain to open up on Plank. That’s not realistic.

They're dipping their toe into the shallow end of NBR. Call me when they open a location on Plank Road or some street named after a double-digit number.

Loss prevention is racist though. The hood will walk in and walk out with cart fulls of groceries, because they know they won’t be prosecuted.

If there's a clear definition to a term, your opinion on it is irrelevant

Pulling up a Google map of NBR shows a Hi Nabor and a Shopper's Value. Tony's isn't considered a grocery and neither are the corner stores.

Neither are dollar stores. Or the Wal Mart Supercenter. And the smaller independent stores that are critical in neighborhoods where people don’t have access to cars (and there are many in north Baton Rouge). They are all critical to feeding the people in the community. The USDA does not count them but still uses the statistic on vehicle access in their definition of “food desert”.

They apply a very narrow definition of “supermarket” to arrive at the conclusion that some areas are food deserts.

Which is why the USDA definition is mostly horse shite and arguably counter productive. If they were able to lure Rouses to Plank/Hollywood with tax breaks, a lot of those corner stores near there would go out of business and the most vulnerable without a car that depend on those smaller indie stores would be in a bind.

Looking at the USDA site and noticed that the Rouses site is in a food desert, but the area across the street on the other side of Florida isn’t. It also seem odd that an area less than 100 feet from a Hi Nabor supermarket is in a food desert.

Why is it broken down by legislative district or census tract rather than the proximity to grocery stores?

Why isn’t this a huge issue at Hi Nabor in north Baton Rouge? Or at the Rouses in low income areas in New Orleans?

There’s a Mexican grocery right down the road from there, la morenita. Great hot food.

It’s not an awful area and a decent location if they can deter the worst of the riff raff from taking it over.

ETA I consider NOFLO to be North Baton Rouge. This store is in NBR in my mind. But it is only the minimum amount of in NBR.

Which brings up the question; is the quality of life there better because they are not in so called food deserts?

The NBR Rouses may put Albertsons on Government out of business.. I have to think a large chunk of their business comes from North of FL.

I was really hoping they would buyout the Shopper’s Value on Government and solidly the gentrification. Oh well, still got that good hood shooping!
